তাইওয়ান দ্বীপ, যা অতীতে ফরমোসা নামেও পরিচিত ছিল, ১৬২৪ থেকে ১৬৬২ সাল পর্যন্ত এবং ১৬৬৪ থেকে ১৬৬৮ সাল পর্যন্ত (মোট প্রায় ৪৫ বছর) আংশিকভাবে ওলন্দাজ প্রজাতন্ত্রের নিয়ন্ত্রণে ছিল। আবিষ্কারের যুগের প্রেক্ষাপটে ওলন্দাজ পূর্ব ভারত কোম্পানি চীনের মিং সাম্রাজ্যের সাথে এবং জাপানের তোকুগাওয়া শোগুন রাজ্যের সাথে বাণিজ্যের উদ্দেশ্যে ফরমোসাতে তাদের উপস্থিতি প্রতিষ্ঠা করে। আরেকটি উদ্দেশ্য ছিল পূর্ব এশিয়াতে পর্তুগিজ সাম্রাজ্য ও স্পেনীয় সাম্রাজ্যের বাণিজ্যিক কর্মকাণ্ডে প্রতিদ্বন্দ্বী হওয়া।

ওলন্দাজ শাসনের সময় তাইওয়ানের অর্থনৈতিক উন্নতি হয়। বিপুল পরিমাণে হরিণ শিকারের পাশাপাশি মিং সাম্রাজ্য থেকে আগত হান জাতির শ্রমিকদের ব্যবহার করে ধান ও আখের আবাদ করা হয়। ওলন্দাজরা স্থানীয় আদিবাসীদেরকে খ্রিস্টধর্মে ধর্মান্তরিত করার প্রচেষ্টা চালায় এবং তাদের কাছে স্থানীয় ঐতিহ্যবাহী সংস্কৃতির যে দিকগুলি অগ্রহণযোগ্য ছিল (যেমন কাটা মাথা শিকার, বলপূর্বক গর্ভপাত, উন্মুক্ত স্থানে নগ্নতা), সেগুলি বন্ধ করার চেষ্টা করে।^[১]

ওলন্দাজদেরকে দ্বীপের সবাই সাদরে গ্রহণ করেনি। আদিবাসীরা এবং পরবর্তীতে হান শ্রমিকেরা বেশ কয়েকবার বিদ্রোহ করে, যেগুলি ওলন্দাজ সেনাবাহিনী শক্তহাতে দমন করে। ১৭শ শতকের শুরুতে ছিং রাজবংশের উত্থান হলে ওলন্দাজ পূর্ব ভারত কোম্পানি মিং রাজবংশের সাথে সম্পর্ক ছিন্ন করে ছিংদের সাথে মৈত্রী গঠন করে, এবং এর সুবাদে তাদের বাণিজ্যপথ ও জাহাজপথগুলির উপর সম্পূর্ণ নিয়ন্ত্রণ লাভ করে। ১৬৬২ সালে মিংপন্থী কোশিংয়া সেনাদের কর্তৃক জেলান্ডিয়া দুর্গের অবরোধশেষে দ্রুত ওলন্দাজ উপনিবেশের অবসান ঘটে। তারা ওলন্দাজদেরকে দ্বীপ থেকে বহিস্কার করে, এবং মিং রাজবংশের অনুগত ও ছিং রাজবংশবিরোধী থুংনিং রাজ্য প্রতিষ্ঠা করে।
