Ribosomi, organele koje [katalizirajusintezu proteina sastoje se od male 40S podjedinice i velike 60S podjedinice. Zajedno, ove podjedinice sastoje se od četiri tipa molekula RNK i približno 80 strukturno različitih proteina. Ovaj gen kodira ribosomski protein S4, komponentu 40S podjedinice. Ribosomski protein S4 jedini je ribosomski protein za koji je poznato da ga kodira više od jednog gena: ovaj gen i onaj za ribosomski protein S4, Y-vezani (RPS4Y). Dvije izoforme koje kodiraju ovi geni nisu identične, ali su funkcijski ekvivalenti. Ribosomski protein S4 pripada porodici ribosomskih proteina S4E. Ovaj gen nije podložan X-inaktivaciji. Sugerira se da haploinsuficijencija gena ribosomskog proteina S4 ima ulogu u pojavi Turnerovog sindroma; međutim, ova hipoteza pokazala se kao kontroverzna. Kao što je uobičajreno za gene koji kodiraju ribosomske proteine, postoji više obrađenih pseudogena ovog gena raspršenih širom genoma.[7]
