Fe'i ganwyd yn India. Cafodd ei addysg yn Ysgol Stowe a Coleg Magdalen, Rhydychen. Roedd yn gyfaill i'r hanesydd A. J. P. Taylor a'r nofelydd George Orwell.
Enillodd y Wobr BAFTA Richard Dimbleby ym 1976.
