APV ist ein selektiver NMDA-Rezeptor-Antagonist, das diesen Rezeptor schon in kleinen Dosen kompetitiv hemmt.[2] Dabei wird das D-Enantiomer dieser Aminosäure als das biologisch aktive Isomer angesehen.
