Μπους από το Τέξας, κατάφερε να κερδίσει με οριακή νίκη τον Δημοκρατικό ανθυποψήφιό του, και απερχόμενο Αντιπρόεδρο των Ηνωμένων ΠολιτειώνΑλ Γκορ από το Τενεσί, λαμβάνοντας 271 από τις 538 εκλεκτορικούς ψήφους, λαμβάνοντας 47,9% της λαϊκής ψήφου, έναντι 48,4% της λαϊκής ψήφου και 267 εκλεκτορικών ψήφων του Γκορ. Έτσι ο Μπους, έχασε την πλειοψηφία της λαϊκής ψήφου σε ομοσπονδιακό επίπεδο, και κέρδισε οριακά το εκλεκτορικό κολλέγιο. Στη πραγματικότητα, η πολιτεία που έδωσε την νίκη στον Τζορτζ Ο. Μπους, ήταν η Φλόριντα, όπου τότε διέθετε 25 εκλέκτορες, κερδίζοντας ύστερα από πολλές δικαστικές διαμάχες, με περιθώριο μόλις 537 ψήφων, λαμβάνοντας έτσι τους 25 εκλέκτορες, και κερδίζοντας την προεδρία των ΗΠΑ.[4][5]
Η προεδρία του Τζορτζ Ο. Μπους, ξεκίνησε το Σάββατο, 20 Ιανουαρίου 2001 στις 12:00 το μεσημέρι ύστερα από την ορκωμοσία του, ως 43ος Πρόεδρος των Ηνωμένων Πολιτειών, και έληξε την Τρίτη, 20 Ιανουαρίου 2009 στις 12:00 το μεσημέρι, με την ορκωμοσία του ΔημοκρατικούΜπαράκ Ομπάμα, ως 44ου Προέδρου των Ηνωμένων Πολιτειών.
Ο Τυφώνας Κατρίνα (2005), ο οποίος κατέστρεψε το μεγαλύτερο μέρος από τη Νέα Ορλεάνη (Λουιζιάνα), και πολλές περιοχές στο Μισισίπι, την Αλαμπάμα, τη Φλόριντα και το Τέξας. Σκοτώθηκαν περισσότερα από 1.833 άτομα, με το κόστος των καταστροφών να υπολογίζεται σε 81 δισεκατομμύρια δολάρια ΗΠΑ.
