La competición de baloncesto se viene disputando en la División I de la NCAA desde 1936, aunque hasta 1950 no se reconocieron oficialmente las estadísticas de asistencias. Tras dos temporadas, entre 1953 y 1983 dejaron de nuevo de ser consideradas. Estas se recogen anualmente en el National Basketball Committee Official Basketball Guide.[1]
Avery Johnson de la Southern University ostenta el récord de más asistencias por partido en una temporada, con 13,3 por partido, en la temporada 1982-83.[2] Logró 399 asistencias esa temporada, que es la segunda mejor marca absoluta tras las 406 que repartió Mark Wade de UNLV en la temporada 1986-87.[1]
Sólo tres jugadores han logrado repetir aparición en la lista de los mejores asistentes en la liga universitaria. El propio Avery Johnson, en 1987 y 1988, Jared Jordan del Marist College, en 2006 y 2007, y Jason Brickman de LIU Brooklyn en 2013 y 2014 son los jugadores que lo consiguieron. En la temporada 2004-05 se produjo el único empate a lo largo de los años, entre Damitrius Coleman de Mercer y Will Funn de Portland State, ya que ambos lobraron el mismo número de asistencias, 224, en 28 partidos.[1]
Hasta 2017, sólo dos freshman (T. J. Ford y Lonzo Ball) y un sophomore (Jason Kidd) han liderado la División I de la NCAA en pases de canasta. Dos jugadores nacidos fuera de Estados Unidos también lo han logrado, el letón Raimonds Miglinieks de UC Irvine en 1996, y el neozelandés Mark Dickel de UNLV en 2000.
