La competición de baloncesto se viene disputando en la División I de la NCAA desde 1936, aunque hasta 1947 no se reconocieron oficialmente las estadísticas de anotación. Estas se recogen anualmente en el National Basketball Committee Official Basketball Guide.[1]
Pistol Pete Maravich, de LSU ostenta los récords de anotación en una carrera (3.667 puntos) y de promedio (44,2 por partido).[2] Sus tres títulos consecutivos de mejor anotador entre 1968 y 1970 son también los tres mayores porcentajes de la historia de la liga. En la época en la que Maverich compitió, los jugadores de primer año no contaban para las estadísticas finales, lo que hizo que el otro jugador que obtuvo tres títulos de anotación, Oscar Robertson, no consiguiera un cuarto por su primer año de novato.
Nueve jugadores han conseguido más de un título en anotación. El último de ellos fue Reggie Williams del Instituto Militar de Virginia. (2007, 2008).[3] En dos ocasiones ha ocurrido también que sendos compañeros de un mismo equipo ganaran títulos consecutivamente. Frank Selvy y Darrell Floyd de Furman lo lograron en 1954 y 1955, respectivamente,[4] mientras que Hank Gathers y Bo Kimble de Loyola Marymount lo consiguieron en 1989 y 1990.
Entre 1935–36 y 1946–47, no hubo líderes oficiales de anotación en la NCAA. Las estadísticas se compilaban en aquella época en la National Basketball Committee Official Basketball Guide, la cual no estaba regulada por las autoridades de la NCAA. A pesar de ello, sus nombres y estadísticas aparecen en la guía oficial de la liga.[1]
