Le 6 août 2011, un hélicoptère CH-47D Chinook s'écrase après avoir été abattu à la roquette par des talibans dans l'est de Kaboul en Afghanistan, entraînant la mort des 38 personnes qui se trouvaient à bord. C'est la plus grosse perte humaine américaine en un seul incident depuis le début de la deuxième guerre d’Afghanistan, dépassant celle de l'opération Red Wings de 2005.
