シェリリン・ケニヨン（Sherrilyn Kenyon、1965年 - ）は、アメリカ合衆国のベストセラー作家。ジョージア州コロンバス出身[1]。代表作は、アーバン・ファンタジーの「ダーク・ハンターシリーズ」。また、キンリー・マクレガー名義では歴史ものやパラノーマルものを執筆している[2]。ケニヨンの作品の発行部数は100か国以上で3000万部以上に上る[3][4]。ケニヨン、マクレガー両方の名で『ニューヨーク・タイムズ』『パブリッシャーズ・ウィークリー』『USAトゥデイ』などのベストセラーリストに名を連ね、その人気はアメリカのみならず、ドイツやオーストラリア、イギリスなどでも高い。

経歴

1965年、ジョージア州コロンバスに生まれる。当時、父親はアメリカ陸軍フォート・ベニング駐屯地に駐在、母親はコンビニエンスストアの店員だった。父はケニヨンが8歳の時にケニヨンと弟、小児麻痺の姉トリッシュを置いて家を出て行った（ケニヨンが高校生の時に出戻った）。ケニヨンは姉の介護を手伝うためコロンバスに残り、弟はアトランタの祖父母の元で育てられた。約2年後、ケニヨンは母と姉と共にアトランタへ移り住み、再び家族で暮らせるようになった。3年生の時に、母の日にシングルマザーである母について書いたエッセイでコンテストに勝ち、翌年にバージニア植民地に暮らしていた少女について書いた物語が、DAR（アメリカ独立に直接関与した人々のうち、女性の子孫のための組織「アメリカ革命の娘たち」）の賞を受賞したことで、初めて書くということを認識した。[5]

ケニヨンは幼少期から青少年期にかけて、8人の男子と共に育った。2人は実の兄弟で、6人は家庭の事情で家族と離れて暮らす従兄弟たちだった。8人の中ではケニヨンが最年長だった。[5]

子供のころ、ケニヨンは虐待からの逃避のために作家になりたいと思っていることを自覚していた。現在は、児童虐待反対を声高に叫び、被害児童を救うファンドに参加している。幼稚園の時、ブラウニー（ガールスカウト）の自分用の便覧には、大きくなったら作家と母親になりたいと書いていた。しかし彼女にとっては夢の実現は容易なことではなかった。7歳の時、初めての小説"Sharron's Secret" （「シャロンの秘密」）をイラスト付きで書いた。少女が超能力で兄弟を殺し、学校を乗っ取るホラーテイストの内容だったという。14歳の時、プロのライターとして初めて文章を書き、高校や大学でも学校新聞や卒業アルバム、地元紙や雑誌などに文章を書く仕事をした。母は内容を問わずどんな本や映画でも見させてくれたため、ゾンビなどのホラーやパラノーマルものの作品が大好きだった。わずか4歳の時に『ナイト・オブ・ザ・リビングデッド』をドライブイン・シアターに見に連れて行ってくれたこともあった。[5]

マーベルコミックスやDCコミックスなどのコミック関連の職業に就き、自分のシリーズ作品を手掛けたいという目標を持ち、大学では美術を専攻したいと思い、サバンナ・カレッジ・アート・アンド・デザインへの入学が決まったが、金銭的な事情などにより断念。ジョージア州立大学に進学し、英語を専攻した。ジョージア大学のクリエイティブ・ライティング・プログラムを受けたいと思いながら、州立大学で2年学んだ後にジョージア大学へ転籍した。大学では、クラス分けのテストで低得点だったため、ディスレクシアと判断され補修クラスになったが、初日の授業で教授が誤りに気付き、その教授が教鞭を取る上級クラスへ変更となった[6]。

2年間英語を専攻し、学校新聞のエディターを務めた。クリエイティブ・ライティング・プログラムには3回申し込んだが、受けられなかった。3度目の申し込みの後、そのプログラムを担当する教授から、そのプログラムは出版関係の仕事に就きたいと真剣に考える学生のためのもので、ケニヨンには才能がないからもう申し込まないようにと言われた。当時雑誌や定期刊行物に数え切れないほどのケニヨンの短編が掲載されていたことを教授は知らなかったようである。[6]
