Pseudomonadotaは細菌の門の一つである。元来はプロテオバクテリア門（プロテオバクテリアもん、Proteobacteria）と呼ばれていたが、2021年に国際原核生物命名規約によってPseudomonadotaと改名された^[28]。光栄養、化学栄養、独立栄養、従属栄養、好気呼吸、嫌気呼吸、発酵など様々な代謝様式をもつ系統群が含まれ、炭素・窒素固定に関わるものや、自然界の物質循環に関わる多くの自由生活性のものが含まれている。また、大腸菌、サルモネラ、ビブリオ、ヘリコバクターなど多種多様な病原体が含まれている。また、この分類群は、他の細菌の分類群と同様に基本的にはrRNA配列によって定義されている。その多様性から、ギリシャ神話で姿を変幻自在に変える神プローテウスにちなんで名付けられた。

特徴

Pseudomonadotaは、主としてリポ多糖(LPS)から成る外膜を持ち、グラム陰性である。鞭毛によって動き回るものが多いが、不動性のものや、滑走性のものもある。滑走性のものとして、粘液細菌という集合して多細胞性の子実体を形成する独特な細菌が挙げられる。代謝型も多様である。ほとんどのものは絶対好気あるいは通性嫌気性の従属栄養性細菌であるが、例外も多い。必ずしも近縁ではない多くの属が光合成を行うことができるが、それらは赤い色をしていることが多いので紅色細菌と呼ばれている。しかし、系統的には光栄養と化学栄養の菌種が混在しているので、それらをまとめて紅色細菌と呼ばれたこともある。

下位分類

Pseudomonadotaは2024年現在、分類命名の国際決定機関である"List of Prokaryotic names with Standing in Nomenclature"(LPSN)によって8つの綱（アルファプロテオバクテリア綱、ベータプロテオバクテリア綱、ガンマプロテオバクテリア綱、デルタプロテオバクテリア綱、イプシロンプロテオバクテリア綱、アシドチオバシラス綱、ヒュドロゲノピルス綱、オリゴフレクスス綱）に分けられている。アメリカ国立生物工学情報センター（NCBI）のデータベースではゼータプロテオバクテリア綱を含む。尚、LPSNではゼータプロテオバクテリア綱はアルファプロテオバクテリア綱に統合されている。

アルファプロテオバクテリア綱

アルファプロテオバクテリア綱には光合成性の属の大部分と、それ以外にC1化合物を代謝する属、植物や動物の共生体（リゾビウム目など）、危険な病原体であるリケッチア目などが含まれている。さらに真核細胞のミトコンドリアはこのグループの細菌に由来していると考えられている（細胞内共生説を参照）。ただし、ミトコンドリアと最も近縁のアルファプロテオバクテリアが何かについては結論が出ていない。酢酸菌のアセトバクター属も含まれる。マグネトコッカス目については、他のアルファプロテオバクテリアと相違点が多く、独立した綱とする意見もある。

ベータプロテオバクテリア綱

ベータプロテオバクテリア綱は好気性や通性の細菌からなり、それらはたいてい非常に多様な化合物を分解できるが、さらに化学合成無機栄養性（アンモニア酸化をするニトロソモナスなど）や、光合成性（RhodocyclusやRubrivivax属）のものも含まれている。ベータプロテオバクテリア綱細菌はアンモニアを酸化して植物にとって重要な亜硝酸を生じ、様々な植物の窒素固定に重要な役割を演じている。その多くは下水や土壌といった環境試料に見付かる。この綱の病原体としては淋病や髄膜脳炎を起こすナイセリア科のものや、バークホルデリア目の百日咳菌などがある。

ガンマプロテオバクテリア綱

ガンマプロテオバクテリア綱は、腸内細菌科、ビブリオ科、シュードモナス科といった、医学的、科学的に重要な細菌群を含んでいる。非常に多くの重要な病原体がこの綱に所属しており、例えばサルモネラ（腸炎・腸チフス)、赤痢菌、エルシニア（ペスト）、ビブリオ（コレラ、腸炎ビブリオ）、緑膿菌（院内感染や嚢胞性線維症患者における肺感染症）、肺炎を発症させるレジオネラ、肺炎桿菌などがある。大腸菌は腸内細菌科に含まれる。一部の光合成細菌（紅色硫黄細菌）も含まれている。また、リンの代わりにヒ素をゲノムに取り込むことができるとされたGFAJ-1株もこの綱のハロモナス類に属する。

デルタプロテオバクテリア綱

デルタプロテオバクテリア綱は好気性の群や、子実体を作る粘液細菌、そして既知の硫酸還元細菌（デスルフォビブリオ, Desulfobacter, Desulfococcus, Desulfonemaなど）や硫黄還元細菌（Desulfuromonasなど）の大部分とその他様々な生理条件（三価鉄還元性のGeobacterや栄養共生性のPelobacterやSyntrophus）を好む偏性嫌気性の群からなる。単系統性には疑問が持たれており、プロテオバクテリアから分離し、いくつかの門とすることが提唱されている。多くの偏性嫌気性生物を含む一方、真核生物と類似した複雑な多細胞構造をとる好気性生物であるミクソバクテリアもこの綱に含まれる。

イプシロンプロテオバクテリア綱

イプシロンプロテオバクテリア綱には、Wolinella、ヘリコバクター・ピロリ、カンピロバクターといった湾曲ないしらせん形をした種が含まれる。人や動物の消化管に棲息している共生体（牛のWolinella）ないし病原体（胃のヘリコバクターや十二指腸のカンピロバクター）、あるいは熱水噴出口に住む好熱菌として発見された。

オリゴフレクスス綱

2014年にサハラ砂漠の砂礫から発見されたOligoflexus tunisiensisのみがオリゴフレクスス綱に記載されている。
