사이토글로빈은 모든 조직에서 발현되며, 특히 해양 포유류에서 가장 많이 활용되는 글로빈 분자이다. 사이토글로빈은 2001년에 발견되었으며,[6] 2002년에 사이토글로빈으로 명명되었다.[7] 사이토글로빈은 저산소증으로부터 보호하는 역할을 하는 것으로 생각된다. 사이토글로빈의 예상되는 기능은 동맥혈에서 뇌로 산소를 전달하는 것이다.[8]
