헨드릭 빌럼 판 론

헨드릭 빌럼 판 론(네덜란드어: Hendrik Willem van Loon, 1882년 1월 14일 ~ 1944년 3월 11일)은 네덜란드계 미국인으로서 아동도서 작가이며 역사가이며 기자였다.

생애

네덜란드 로테르담에서 동명의 아버지와 엘리자베스 요하나 항켄 사이에서 태어났다. 그는 코넬 대학교에서 공부하기 위해 1902년에 미국에 가서 1905년에 학위를 받았다. 1905년 러시아 혁명 때와 1914년 제1차 세계 대전가 발발할 무렵엔 특파원으로 일하기도 했다. 나중엔 역사 교수가 되어 코넬 대학교에서 1915년부터 1917년까지 가르쳤고, 1919년엔 미국 시민권을 취득했다.

1906년 하버드 대학교 교수의 딸인 엘리자 잉거솔 보우디치와 결혼하여 두 아들 헨리 보우디치와 제라드 빌럼을 낳았다. 그 후 결혼을 두 차례 더 했는데 한번은 1920년에 엘리자 헬렌 크리스웰과, 다른 한번은 1927년 극작가 프란세스 구드리치 에이미스와의 결혼이었는데, 에이미스와의 이혼 후 다시 나중에 결국 그의 재산을 상속받게 되는 크리스웰에게 갔다.

업적

판 론은 1910년대부터 그가 생을 마감할 때까지 많은 책을 썼고 삽화도 손수 그렸다. 그 책들 중에 가장 많이 알려진 작품은 특히 아이들을 위한 역사책인 The Story of Mankind(한국어 번역 제목: 인류이야기)로써 1922년 제 1회 뉴베리상 수상작이기도 하다. 나중에 그 책은 그가 직접 업데이트하기도 하고, 그 후 그의 아들, 나중엔 다른 역사가들이 업데이트를 계속 해오고 있다.
