അന്റാർട്ടിക്കയിലുള്ള ഭാരതത്തിന്റെ ആദ്യ ശാസ്ത്ര പര്യവേക്ഷണ സ്ഥാപനമായിരുന്നു ദക്ഷിൺ ഗംഗോത്രി.

വിവരണം

1983-84 വർഷത്തിൽ നടത്തിയ മുന്നാം അന്റാർട്ടിക്ക പര്യാടനത്തിലാണ്‌ ഇത് സ്ഥാപിക്കപെട്ടത്. ശീതകാലത്ത് അന്റാർട്ടിക്കയിൽ തങ്ങി ശാസ്ത്രപഠനങ്ങൾ നടത്താൻ തുടങ്ങിയത് ഈ സമയത്തായിരുന്നു. പന്ത്രണ്ട് അംഗങ്ങളുള്ള സംഘമായിരുന്നു മുന്നാം പര്യടന വിഭാഗം. ഈ സംഘം ഒരു വർഷം (1984 മാർച്ച്-1985 മാർച്ച്) ഇവിടെ ചിലവഴിക്കുകയുണ്ടായി. പിന്നീട് മറ്റൊരു സ്ഥിരം പര്യവേക്ഷണ കേന്ദ്രമായ മൈത്രി 1989 ൽ ഇവിടെ ഇന്ത്യ സ്ഥാപിച്ചു. 1990 ൽ ദക്ഷിൺ ഗംഗോത്രി കേന്ദ്രം ഉപേക്ഷിക്കുകയും അതിനെ ഒരു എണ്ണ വിതരണ കേന്ദ്രമായി(supply base) പരിവർത്തിപ്പിക്കുകയും ചെയ്തു.^[1]
