ഇന്ത്യയുടെ സ്വാതന്ത്ര്യത്തിനുശേഷം, 1949-ൽ ഈ നിയമം റദ്ദാക്കുകയും മീന ജാതിയും മറ്റ് ജാതികളും ആക്റ്റ് വഴി ഡിനോട്ടിഫൈ ചെയ്യുകയും ചെയ്തു. 2005-ൽ, ഇന്ത്യാ ഗവൺമെന്റ് ദേശീയ കമ്മീഷൻ രൂപീകരിച്ചു.
മീന ജാതി പ്രധാനമായും ഉത്തരേന്ത്യൻ സംസ്ഥാനങ്ങളിലാണ് സ്ഥിതി ചെയ്യുന്നത്, ഇന്ത്യയിലെ വിവിധ സംസ്ഥാനങ്ങൾ മീന ജാതിയെ വ്യത്യസ്ത വിഭാഗങ്ങളിൽ ഉൾപ്പെടുത്തിയിട്ടുണ്ട്.
സംസ്ഥാനങ്ങളുടെ പട്ടിക ഇപ്രകാരമാണ്-
മധ്യപ്രദേശ് - മധ്യപ്രദേശിലെ സിൻറോജ് ജില്ലയിലെ വിദിഷ ഉപവിഭാഗത്തിൽ മീന ജാതിയെ പട്ടികവർഗ്ഗ വിഭാഗത്തിൽ ഉൾപ്പെടുത്തി, 01-ജനുവരി-2003-ലെ ഇന്ത്യാ ഗവൺമെന്റിന്റെ ഗസറ്റ് വിജ്ഞാപനത്തിന് ശേഷം നീക്കംചെയ്തു.[10]"നിലവിൽ, മീന (റാവത്ത്) രാജ്യത്തെ മറ്റ് പിന്നാക്ക വിഭാഗങ്ങളിൽ ഉൾപ്പെടുത്തിയിട്ടുണ്ട് (ഡാറ്റ-എൻട്രി നമ്പർ:19)"[8]ബാക്കിയുള്ള എല്ലാ 'മീന'യും റിസർവ് ചെയ്യാത്ത വിഭാഗത്തിൽ ഉൾപ്പെടുത്തിയിട്ടുണ്ട്.[8][9][10]

മീൻ എന്ന സംസ്കൃത പദത്തിൽ നിന്നാണ് 'മീനാ' രൂപം കൊണ്ടത്[13][14]. 6-ആം നൂറ്റാണ്ടിൽ ജീവിച്ചിരുന്ന മത്സ്യസാമ്രാജ്യത്തിലെ ജനങ്ങളുടെ പിൻതലമുറക്കാരാണെന്ന് അവർ അവകാശപ്പെടുന്നു. [15]പുരാതന മത്സ്യ രാജവംശത്തിൽ ജീവിക്കുന്ന ഗോത്രങ്ങളെയും മീനാ എന്നു വിളിക്കാമെന്നാണ് ചരിത്രകാരനായ പ്രമോദ് കുമാർ പറയുന്നത്.[16]അവർ രജപുത്രരെ ആക്രമിക്കുകയും രാജസ്ഥാനിലെ ചില പ്രദേശങ്ങളിൽ മീനാസ് ഭരിക്കുകയും ചെയ്തു. മീനാസിൽ നിന്ന് ബന്ദിയെ റാവു ദേവാ (1342 എ.ഡി.) പിടിച്ചെടുക്കുകയും കച്ച്വാഹ രാജ്പുത്രരുടെ ധുന്ദർ, ചോപ്പൊലി തുടങ്ങിയവ മുസ്ലീം ഭരണാധികാരികളുടെ കൈകളിലെത്തുകയും ചെയ്തു. കോട്ട, ജലവാർ, കരൗലി, ജലോർ എന്നിവ മുൻപ് മീനാ സ്വാധീനത്തിന്റെ മറ്റു മേഖലകളായിരുന്നു. അവസാനം അവർ കീഴടങ്ങാൻ നിർബന്ധിതരായി.[17]
ആദ്യകാല ഇന്ത്യയെ കുറിച്ച് പഠിച്ച ചരിത്രകാരനായ നന്ദിനി സിൻഹ കപൂർ, 19-ാം നൂറ്റാണ്ടിൻറെ തുടക്കത്തിൽ തന്നെ അവരുടെ സ്വത്വത്തെ പുനർനിർമ്മിക്കുന്നതിനുള്ള ഒരു ശ്രമത്തിൽ നിന്നാണ് മീനാസിന്റെ വാമൊഴി പാരമ്പര്യം വികസിപ്പിച്ചതെന്നാണ് കരുതുന്നത്. ഇരുപത്തൊന്നാം നൂറ്റാണ്ടിലുടനീളം തുടർന്നു കൊണ്ടിരിക്കുന്ന ഈ പ്രക്രിയയെക്കുറിച്ച്, "മഹാമനസ്കന്മാർക്ക് മഹത്തരമായി തങ്ങളുടേതായ ബഹുമാനം നൽകുന്നതിന് മീനാസ് ശ്രമിക്കാറുണ്ട്". ഫിൻലാൻഡുംസ്കോട്ട്ലൻഡും പോലെയുള്ള രാജ്യങ്ങളിലെ ആളുകളോട് വാസ്തവിക സംവാദത്തിലൂടെ പാരമ്പര്യം കണ്ടുപിടിക്കാൻ മീനാസ് ആവശ്യപ്പെട്ടു. ഇതിന്റെ പ്രാഥമിക ഉപയോഗം ചരിത്രകാരന്മാരും സാമൂഹ്യശാസ്ത്രജ്ഞരും അംഗീകരിച്ചത് "അനീതികൾ, ചൂഷണം, അടിച്ചമർത്തൽ എന്നിവയ്ക്കെതിരായ സാമൂഹ്യ പ്രതിഷേധം" ഒരു സമൂഹത്തിന്റെ ഇമേജ് വീണ്ടെടുക്കാൻ സഹായിക്കുന്ന ഒരു റൈസൺ ഡിഇട്രി (raison d'être) ആണ്. മീനാസിന് സ്വന്തമായി റെക്കോർഡ് ചരിത്രമുണ്ടായിരുന്നില്ലെന്നും കൊളോണിയൽ കാലഘട്ടത്തിലെ മധ്യകാല പേർഷ്യൻകാരുടെ കണക്കുകളും രേഖകളും പ്രതികൂലമായി ചിത്രീകരിച്ചിട്ടുണ്ടെന്നും കപൂർ പറയുന്നു. മധ്യകാലഘട്ടത്തിൽ നിന്നും ബ്രിട്ടീഷ് രാജ് വരെയുള്ള മീനാസുകളെക്കുറിച്ചുള്ള പരാമർശങ്ങൾ അവരെ അക്രമാസക്തരായ, കൊള്ളയടിക്കുന്ന കുറ്റവാളികൾ, സാമൂഹികവിരുദ്ധ വംശീയ ആദിവാസി വിഭാഗങ്ങൾ എന്നിങ്ങനെ വിവരിക്കുന്നു.
