Het tennistoernooi Australian Open werd in 1978 bij de vrouwen voor de 53e keer gehouden. De ongeplaatste Australische Chris O'Neil won het toernooi voor de eerste keer door in de finale de als zevende geplaatste Amerikaanse Betsy Nagelsen met 6-3 en 7-6 te verslaan.
