Het wereldkampioenschap hockey voor vrouwen werd in 1986 in het Wagener-stadion in het Nederlandse Amstelveen georganiseerd door de FIH. Het toernooi duurde van 15 tot en met 24 augustus. Twaalf landen deden mee. De Nederlandse hockeyploeg behield de wereldtitel. In 42 wedstrijden werd in totaal 151 keer gescoord, keurig verdeeld over veld- en strafcornerdoelpunten: 67. Het resterende aantal (17) kwam tot stand via strafballen.
Kwalificatie
[bewerken | brontekst bewerken]De beste 8 landen van het vorige wereldkampioenschap waren direct geplaatst. Ierland en Spanje plaatsten zich via de Intercontinental Cup 1983, de Sovjet-Unie en Argentinië via de Intercontinental Cup 1985.

[bewerken | brontekst bewerken]De twaalf landen werden in twee groepen gedeeld. De nummers 1 en 2 speelden de halve finales. De nummers 3 en 4 speelden om de plaatsten 5 t/m 8 en de overige landen om plaatsen 9 t/m 12.
