Once Upon a Time er det sjuande studioalbumet til det skotske poprockbandet Simple Minds, gjeve ut i oktober 1985 på Virgin (A&M i USA).

Bakgrunn

Produsenten på albumet var Jimmy Iovine, som hadde arbeidd med artistar som gjerne hadde ein aggressiv, gitarbasert stil, som Bruce Springsteen og Stevie Nicks, og han tok med seg denne tilnærminga til bandet. Iovine pressa særleg frontmannen Jim Kerr mot ein meir energisk vokal.^[1]

Sjølv om dei alt var suksessrike i heimlandet og forskjellige land i Europa og Oseania, var Simple Minds berre nyleg blitt populære i USA, hovudsakleg på grunn av songen «Don't You (Forget About Me)», skriven av Keith Forsey og Steve Schiff. Denne songen var på filmmusikkalbumet til The Breakfast Club og gjekk til topps på singellista i USA. Men bandet tok med vilje ikkje denne songen med på albumet fordi dei hadde vore motvillige til å spele han inn. Likevel vart den bombastiske poprock-stilen på denne songen tonegjevande for mykje av Once Upon a Time, særskild den arena-venlege singelen «Alive and Kicking». Once Upon a Time har òg somme likskapar med det førre studioalbumet deira, Sparkle in the Rain, som utforska ein liknande stil.

Mottaking

Albumet kom ut 21. oktober 1985 og toppa albumlista i Storbritannia og nådde tiandeplassen i USA, der det låg fem veker på rad.

Det vart gjeve ut fire singlar frå albumet: «Alive and Kicking» (Storbritannia nr. 7, USA nr. 3), «All the Things She Said» (Storbritannia nr. 9, USA nr. 28), «Sanctify Yourself» (Storbritannia nr. 10, USA nr. 14) og «Ghost Dancing» (Storbritannia nr. 13).

Kritikaren MacKenzie Wilson roste seinare albumet for AllMusic og skreiv at det gav lyttarane ein «rå energi og solide komposisjonar, som dei ikkje heilt klarte å oppnå på dei tidlegare albuma sine.» Han likte særskild singlane «Alive and Kicking» og «Sanctify Yourself.»^[1]

Once Upon a Time kom ut med to forskjellige omslag då det kom ut første gongen. Det alternativet omslaget nyttar baksida som framsida og motsett. Albumet vart ommastra og gjeve ut på ny i 2002 og 2003. Det kom òg ut på SACD i 2003. I 2005 gav Virgin ut albumet på nytt i ei DVD-Audio-utgåve. Alle songane vart då miksa i 5.1-kringlyd, og så miksa ned til 2.0-stereo for å vere kompatibel med musikkanlegg som ikkje hadde kringlyd. I dei fleste tilfelle er spora på denne nye miksen noko lengre enn på originalen. I 2012 kom ei ny utgjeving av albumet i ein plateboks med fem plater, kalla 5 Album Set. 4. desember 2015 vart fleire format av albumet gjeve ut i ei luksus- og superluksusutgåve i ein plateboks med fem CD-plater og ein DVD.

I 2013 vart «All the Things She Said» nytta på ein av radiostasjonane i videospelet Grand Theft Auto V.
