Kwongan

Kwongan es una ecoregion que se tròba al sud-oèst d'Austràlia Occidentala. Lo nom ven de la lenga dels aborigens Noongar e foguèt definit per Beard (1976) coma un luòc arenós e dobèrt sens grands arbres e amb una vegetacion arbustiva. I a dos tipes principals de vegetacion al Kwongan: los arbusts de bruguièra e de grops de plantas genistoïdas.

Aquel tèrme es vengut corrent en Austràlia e es mai o mens equivalent al fynbos de Sudafrica, al chaparral de Califòrnia, al de matorral de Chile e al maquís e present dins totas aquestas regions ont i a un clima mediterranèu.

La populacion de Wongan Hills pren son nom del kwongan.

Lo primièr libre consacrat al kwongan (Pate e Beard 1984) ensagèt separar l'utilizacion d'aquel tèrme totes los luòcs sabloses qu'èra utilizat tradicionalament pels Noongars. Beard e Pate (1984) preferissián l'utilizar estrictament a la vegetacion.

L'ecoregion Kwongan es vasta e ocupa una quatrena partida de la fitoregion australiana del sud-oèst e conten 70% de las 8.000 espècias de plantas nativas d'aquesta fitoregion (Beard e Pate 1984; Hopper e Gioia 2004). La mitat de sas espècias son endemicas.

De scientifics de la University of Western Australia an prepausat qu'aquesta region siá declarada Patrimòni de l'Umanitat.[1]
