Ower the centuries scores o hugely productive siller mines hae been dug in the area; ane estimate (Wilson an Panczner) is that mines in the aurie hae producit seiven times as much siller as come frae the famous silver mine of Kongsberg, Norawa. Little minin is nou done.
Lairge fortunes wur made, maist visibly reflectit in a castle-like hame that Alexander Robey Shepherd, the last govrenor o Washington, D.C., haed built efter leavin the Unitit States in 1875.
