Jovellanos is a municipality an ceety in the Matanzas Province o Cuba.
The municipality is dividit intae the barrios o Asunción, Isabel, Realengo an San José.[1]
It wis foondit in 1842 as Corral de la Bemba[1] on the location o an auld ranch cried Bemba. It teuk its current name in 1870, in honour o the Spainyie writer Gaspar Melchor de Jovellanos. The same year it achievit the status o villa (toun).
Jovellanos is cried bi "bemba" b its indwallers an locals an aw. "Bemba" means "big lippit" in Caribbean Spaingie; this term refers tae the black population o the ceety. Tae ootsiders, it mey hae negative racial owertones, but in the ceety this is no the case. Inside Jovellanos, the black an white population for the maist pairt live harmoniously, side bi side. Tharefore, "bemba" is an affectionate name for the toun uised bi locals.
