San Francisco Ixhuatán is a toun, an the surrounding municipality o the same name, in the Mexican state o Oaxaca. It is pairt o the Juchitán Destrict in the wast o the Istmo de Tehuantepec region. The Nahuatl name element Ixhuatán means "toun o palm fronds".
In 1826, Ixhuatán wis awready establisht as an ejido in the municipality o San Francisco del Mar. In 1886 it became the municipal seat an, in 1926, it wis separatit frae San Francisco del Mar tae form a new, separate municipality as a result o poleetical an admeenistrative conflcits. It currently haes 9050 inhabitants.
