Santa María Temaxcaltepec is a toun an municipality in Oaxaca in sooth-wastren Mexico. It is pairt o the Juquila Destrict in the centre o the Costa Region. The name "Temaxcaltepec" means "hill o baths", a reference tae the uise o steam baths or sweat lodges tae cur the sick.[1]

The municipality covers a aurie o 86.8 km² at a elevation o 1,320 metre abuin sea level. The terrain is ruggit, in the fuithills o the Sierra Madre del Sur. Rainfaw o 2,057 mm occurs maistly atween Juin an October. Flora include amate, fig, locust, avocado, mahogany, aik, cedar, palm, hormiguillo an pastures. Wildlife includes squirrels, armadillos, opossum, tod an brock.[1]

As o 2005, the municipality haed 505 hoosehaulds wi a total population o 2,628, 2,081 o wham spak a indigenous leid. Agricultur is the main economic activity.[1] Temaxcaltepec is ane o the centres o the Chatino fowk, relatit tae the Zapotec but wi a distinct leid.[2] Municipal representatives are selectit accordin tae the tradeetional indigenous seestem (usos y costumbres).
