As o 2005, the municipality haed a tot population o 8,662.[1]
This wis the centre o the Tlanalapan state prior tae the Spaingie incursion. It wis a dependency o Otompa. Bi 1521 the aurie wis taken ower bi the Spaingie. Durin the colonial period it wis pairt o Apa y Tepeapulco except for a short time aroond 1545 whan it wis the centre o a separate jurisdiction.[2]
