The name Torphins mey come fae the Gaelic Torr Fionn, meanin fair/fite hill, or as a corruption o Tor Feithachan, meanin hill o the bogs. Ainither less likely namesake is Thorfinn Sigurdsson, Earl o Orkney, fa micht hae passt throu the airt due tae his pairtnership wi MacBeth.^[7] The village wis oreeginally cried Turfins as aerlie as 1747, but bi 1822 had changed tae Torfins afore becomin Torphins bi 1866.^[8]
