Devorà Ascarelli was a poet from Rome, the capital of Italy. She lived in the middle of the 16th century, but the dates of her birth and death are unknown. Some say that she may have been the first Jewish woman to have a book of hers ever published.[1]
Many things about her are unknown and some contradict each other.[2] She was allegedly born in the Italian merchant class and was well educated and had time to write and translate texts.[3] She also never had a birth last name leading some to believe that she was married to her cousin which meant that she did not have to change her last name.[1]
