Independent Administrative Institution

Independent Administrative Institution (独立行政法人, Dokuritsu gyōsei hōjin) or IAI[1] is a special type of legal entity in Japan.

The IAI are semi-governmental organizations. They are regulated by the Basic Law on Reforming Government Ministries of 1998. There are about 100 IAIs.[2]

IAIs employ management methods of private-sector corporations. Each IAI has autonomy in operations and in budgeting.
