Margaret Maughan (19 June 1928 – May 2020) was a British competitive archer, dartcher and bowls competitor. She was Britain's first gold medalist at the Paralympic Games,[1] and won four gold and two silver medals at the Games. She lit the cauldron at the Olympic Stadium in London at the opening ceremony of the 2012 Summer Paralympics. She was born in Lancashire, England. She competed in the 1960, 1972, 1976 and 1980 games.
At first, Maughan worked as a science teacher. Maughan was paralyzed from the waist down and left unable to walk by a road accident in Malawi in 1959.[2]
Maughan died in May 2020 of problems caused by her spinal cord injury, aged 91.[3]
