約翰·德范克

约翰·德范克（John DeFrancis，1911年8月31日—2009年1月2日），汉学家，语言学家，捐助教育者，美国夏威夷大学荣誉教授。

生平

  • 1911年出生于美国康涅狄格州Bridgeport一个贫困的家庭，父亲是劳工，母亲则为文盲。
  • 1933年春获耶鲁大学经济学学士学位。
  • 1933年9月，在大萧条的环境下，离美赴北京留学。
  • 1933年至1936年间，曾到远东留学和从事研究，在中国、朝鲜、日本各地旅行。
  • 1935年离开北京，与访华的军事史学家Desmond Martin同伴，依照历史记载成吉思汗的远征路线，横跨戈壁沙漠。在这次艰苦跋涉的旅途，他体验到中国基层人民的生活。
  • 1936年在北京认识Katharine Wilson小姐。後来两人结婚。
  • 1936年末返回到美国。
  • 1941年获哥伦比亚大学硕士学位，1948年获哥伦比亚大学博士（中、日文）学位。
  • 1947年至1954年，任薛顿贺尔大学中文研究教授。
  • 1950年至1955年，任《美国东方社会杂志》（Journal of the American Oriental Society）副编辑。
  • 1964年至1966年曾任美国中国语言教师协会会长。
  • 1966年至1976年任夏威夷大学中文教授。
  • 1966年至1978年任《中国语言教师协会杂志》（Journal of the Chinese Language Teachers Association）副编辑。

德范克生前为美国夏威夷大学荣誉中文教授。

学术

1960、70年代，德范克编写了大量中文教材，耶鲁大学出版社出版的一套12册初、中、高级汉语教材。这套被称“DeFrancis 系列”的课本成为了当时美国从事中国研究的学者的教材，是当时美国汉语教室最广泛使用的资源。他早期编写的部分中文口语教材显得有点过时了，在他逝世之前，他仍和耶鲁大学出版社编辑 John Montanaro 合作修订新的 Beginning Chinese I and II. (《初级汉语读本 I 和 II》)。德范克最著名的学术作品是《汉语：事实和幻想（英语：The Chinese Language: Fact and Fantasy）》，他在这本书中驳斥了一些关于汉语的普遍错误概念，同时也在多种问题上阐述了自己的理论。
