The EMU 6-Day Race (formerly known as the EMU 6 Day World Trophy) is an annual international ultramarathon event held in Balatonfüred, Hungary. It is a fixed-time race lasting exactly 144 hours, where competitors attempt to cover the greatest possible distance within the time limit.

Organized by the Egyesület a Magyar Ultrafutásért, the event is considered one of the premier multi-day running events in Europe. Starting from the 2025 event, the race holds the International Association of Ultrarunners (IAU) Gold Label.

In 2024, the event served as the World Championship for the Global Organization of Multi-Day Ultramarathoners (GOMU), and it is scheduled to host the championship again in 2026.[1]

Organization

[edit]

The event is organized by the Egyesület a Magyar Ultrafutásért (EMU). The athletic club was established in Pécs in 2000 through the partnership of dedicated Hungarian ultrarunners.[2]

History and Significance

[edit]

The race was established in 2011 to revive the tradition of multi-day running in Central Europe. Over the years, it has grown from a regional event into a global competition, attracting ultrarunners from across the world.

The event has produced several national records and world-leading performances.[3][4] Notably, in 2024, the Belgian runner Matthieu Bonne set a new men's 6-day world record at the event, covering 1045.519 kilometers, breaking the long-standing record of Yiannis Kouros.[5]

Venue and Course

[edit]

The race takes place in Balatonfüred, a historic spa town located on the northern shore of Lake Balaton. [6][7]

  • Course Specs: The loop is 898.2 meters long. The surface is 100% asphalt and the track is illuminated along its entire length for night running.
  • Direction: The running direction is clockwise.
  • Timing: Lap counting is managed via three chip mats located at three different points on the course to ensure accuracy. At the end of the 144 hours, the fraction of the last lap is measured to determine the final distance.
  • Logistics: Athletes have access to a personal support crew area directly on the track, as well as accommodation in camping houses and dining facilities provided by the organizers.[8]
