The subelative case (abbreviated SUBEL)[1] is a grammatical case meaning movement or direction from under something,[2] used in the Lezgian language[3], and many constructed languages. It can be classified as a sub-type of the ablative case.[4][failed verification]

Lezgian

[edit]

In the Lezgian language, it is marked by adding -кай (-kai) to the ending of the ergative case, the most common endings being -ди, -а, -е (-di, -a, -e).

It can be used to express 'from below': Палту михиникай куьрсарнава (Paltu mikhinikai kürsarnava, the coat hangs from the nail).

It means 'from' in many abstract senses, like 'free from': Гила чи ватан душманрикай азад я (Gila chi vatan dushmanrikai azad ya, now our homeland is free from the enemies)

It can also mean 'against' with verbs like 'protect' and 'save': Анжах дуствиливай чун душмандикай хуьз жеда (Anzhakh dustvilivai chun dushmandikai khüz zheda, only friendship can protect us against the enemy)

With groups of people, it can express 'out of': Гадайринкай гзафбуру рушарихъ галаз кьуьлерзавай (Gadairinkai gzafburu rushariqh galaz q'ülerzavai, many of the group of boys danced with the girls, i.e many out of the boys danced with the girls).

In construction, it can mean 'X becomes Y': Вакай хъсан устӏар жеда (Vakai qhsan ust'ar zheda, you will become a master, literally: a master will become out of you)

Sometimes, it can express the topic of speech (in Lezgian, the absolutive case, in some other languages, nominative case), or though (about): За вакай фагьумзавай (Za vakai fahumzavai, I was thinking about you)

In some cases, it can express the cause of emotions: Гъалидиз вичин бубадикай хъен атана (G'alidiz vichin bubadikai qhel atana, Ali got angry with his father)[3]
