The 2025 Bondi Beach shooting was a terrorist mass shooting that occurred at Bondi Beach in Sydney, Australia during a Hanukkah celebration attended by approximately one thousand people on 14 December 2025. Beginning at 6:47 pm, two alleged gunmen – Sajid Akram and Naveed Akram – killed 15 people, including a 10-year-old child, over seven minutes. Australian Federal Police declared it an Islamic State–linked terrorist attack. Numerous world leaders, news outlets and Australian authorities declared that the shooting was motivated by antisemitism. Australian prime minister Anthony Albanese said it was a deliberate attack on Jewish people during the first day of Hanukkah.

The following is a timeline of the attacks, their background and aftermath.

Before 2024

[edit]

1996

[edit]

1998

[edit]
  • 1998 – Sajid Akram, the older Bondi gunman, migrated to Australia from Hyderabad, in Southern India.[40][41][42][43] Indian media alleged that he later became distant from his family in Indian because they disapproved of him marrying a Christian woman in Australia.[44]

2001

[edit]

2002

[edit]
  • 12 October 2002 – The 2002 Bali bombings, targeting Australian tourists in neighbouring Indonesia, were the deadliest terror attack in Australian history, killing 88 Australians, 38 locals, and 202 people in total.[53][54] The attack, carried out in response to Australian actions in the US-led war on terror.[54][55]

2014

[edit]

2015

[edit]
  • October 2025 – Sajid Akram first lodges a gun licence application, but it lapses without being completed.[60][61]

2017

[edit]
  • 15 July 2017 – Failed Islamic State–linked plan to bomb an Etihad Airways flight departing Sydney for Abu Dhabi.[62] Brothers Mahmoud and Khaled Khayat in Sydney planted a bomb in luggage belonging to their brother Amer Khayat, using parts sent to them by a forth brother, Tarek Khayat, from overseas. Amer was found not guilty, he was used as an unwitting proxy, possibly because his brothers disapproved of his drinking and other habits.[63][64][65][66]

2019

[edit]
  • 15 March 2019 – An attack by an Australian terrorist – inspired by the antisemitic Great Replacement conspiracy theory – kills 51 people in New Zealand. His attack features in Islamic State propaganda with Abu Hassan al-Muhajir calling for attacks on the “nations of the Cross and the apostate” in retaliation for the attack.[67] The Australian terrorist's propaganda was also used by his own side to promote copycat attacks, including on synagogues.
  • Youssef Uweinat (an associate of Naveed) was convicted of terrorism and imprisoned, for attempting to recruit minors to carry out attacks for Islamic State.[68][69][70]
  • Naveed Akram was investigated by the Australian Security Intelligence Organisation (ASIO) over his extremist links.[71][72] The investigation occurred after a planned attack had been successfully thwarted.[73]

2020

[edit]
  • Sajid Akram reapplies for a gun licence. At the time his son Naveed is being watched by ASIO, as a known associate of a convicted Islamic State youth recruiter.[60]

2021

[edit]
  • January – Singaporean security services report the arrest of a youth who was planning a copycat attack on the anniversary of the 15 Match 2019 attack. He had watched videos of theַ shooting spree, read the Australian terrorist's antisemitic manifesto, and also watched ISIS propaganda. The arrested youth "came to the erroneous conclusion that ISIS represented Islam, and that Islam called on its followers to kill non-believers".[74]

2023

[edit]
  • Youssef Uweinat (a past associate of Naveed) was released from prison.[75][76]
  • Sajid Akram's gun licence is granted.[60] At the time he in Australia legally, living with his Australian-born wife and children (who are all citizens), but he is not a citizen himself. After the attack one of the first changes proposed to tighten him laws was restricting gun licences to Australian citizens only.[77][78]

At the time it was characterised as not organised or politically motivated.

He is the first person convicted and sentenced in Australia for transmitting violent extremist material online under the new Commonwealth offence introduced in January 2024 as part of amendments to Australian counter-terrorism legislation.[84][85]

June 2025

[edit]
  • 10 June 2025 – Iran executed 9 convicted Islamic State militants, who had been captured by the IRGC in 2018. They were charged with Moharebeh ("waging war against God") and terrorism against civilians, among other crimes.[86]
  • William Hadad (also known as "Wissam Haddad" and "Abu Ousayd", an extremist preacher who Naveed Akram was linked to as a teenager) loose a racial vilification law suit about speeches he made in November 2023.[87]

August 2025

[edit]
  • Two Islamic State supporters appeared to trying to exploit public protests to further their own agenda. Youssef Uweinat (released from prison in 2023, but claimed to have split from IS) was photographed waving a black flag at the edges of a protest on the Harbour bridge.[69] Extremist preacher William Haddad (also known as "Wissam Haddad" and "Abu Ousayd") posted the flag image on social media saying, "The only flag that counts!" The ABC News report described the preacher as having "no interest in a Palestinian state" and trying to "exploit and fracture the pro-Palestinian movement".[88]

Uweinat, also known as Abu Musa al-Maqdisi, was jailed for nearly four years after being convicted of membership of a terrorist organisation and advocating a terrorist act. When police moved in to arrest him in an early morning raid on his home on December 4, 2019, Uweinat smashed his mobile phone on the floor in a bid to destroy evidence, cutting his hand on glass fragments. The contents of the phone showed that another of Akram's friends in the street preaching group was Isaac El Matari, an Islamic State operative and a self-declared Australian commander of the terrorist organisation, now serving a seven-year prison term... Police have warned they will have "zero tolerance" for protests in the wake of the Bondi terror attack, after a NSW man allegedly called for a "bashing day" at the site of the Cronulla riots. Ryder Roy Shaw, 20, appeared before Gosford Local Court earlier this week charged over a social media post police alleged called for protesters to attend the south Sydney beach "with the purpose of inciting violence". He was charged with using a carriage service to menace, harass, offend, and publicly threaten violence on grounds of race or religion... NSW Police Commissioner Mal Lanyon swiftly issued a declaration under the reforms baring public assemblies across the entire Sydney metropolitan area for 14 days. Acting Assistant Commissioner Brendan Gorman said the Force had "zero tolerance for any behaviour that threatens social cohesion in our state". "Everyone in NSW deserves to be safe and feel safe", he said.
