Calicut

[edit]

@Joebrans: Why are you removing the specific mention of the city of Calicut from the history? Is this statement incorrect? Belbury (talk) 12:26, 21 December 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Its known as kerala now. On a broader terms it came to Kerala. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Joebrans (talkcontribs) 12:29, 21 December 2025 (UTC)[reply]

The article said this, that Calicut is in modern Kerala.
Is there a reason not to mention this specific city, if we have sources that refer to it? Belbury (talk) 12:34, 21 December 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Deleted report on Vishwanath Shenoy's view

[edit]

A paragrah about biryani's origins was today deleted from the article. Since it may be useful, here it is: Chiswick Chap (talk) 09:30, 1 January 2026 (UTC)[reply]

"According to the restaurateur Vishwanath Shenoy, one branch of biryani comes from the Mughals, while another was brought by Arab traders to Kerala) in South India.[1][2]"

Clarifying biryani's origins

[edit]

There has been continued debate amongst scholars and commentators on biryani's origins, reflected to some extent by repeated edits to the article, often either contradicting existing cited claims, or duplicating them. Accordingly it seemed to be worthwhile to clarify the picture with a diagram that presents the available evidence visually. I intend to reorganise the text to accompany the diagram. Inputs (especially additional hard evidence) would be welcome. Chiswick Chap (talk) 15:36, 1 January 2026 (UTC)[reply]

Biryani evidently has some connection with Persia, but commentators disagree on what that might be. Pilau is certainly a Persian dish; Birinj birian ("fried rice") is a Persian phrase describing a dish. The Mughals had biryani by the reign of Akbar.
