Removed surreptitious Marxists.com link from lead
[edit]This shouldn't have been in the lead and is possibly defamatory for a BLP. There is plenty of other material of this sort that can be found that isn't sourced to a Wikipedia editor's opinion.

On September 20, 2022 he asked a question on Twitter: "There is some social phenomenon which I suspect explains non work, non marriage, deaths of despair, general alienation and, I suspect, the rise of reactionary populism. It should be a major task of social science to understand it."[https://twitter.com/lhsummers/status/1572433427365826565 This question demonstrates the large gap in his knowledge about the Karl Marx theory of alienation, which Summers, as an economist should be aware of. describing OpenAI as an "artificial general intelligence company"
[edit]Tangential to the main topic of the article but isn't it a bit odd to describe them this way when the concept of artificial general intelligence is still only theoretical? it's not like they've got AGI currently on offer. The page for OpenAI itself describes them as an "artificial intelligence organization," which seems far more accurate. Giant xquid (talk) 18:18, 29 July 2025 (UTC)
Adding info regarding Epstein
[edit]With Elizabeth Warren calling on Harvard to severe ties with Summers due to his coms w/ Epstein, should we at least describe the criticism he's receiving for his communications with Epstein? Here's reliable sources that discuss Summers' mentions in the Epstein emails: Bloomberg, The Harvard Crimson, The New York Times, Boston Globe, Masslive, Financial Times TDKR Chicago 101 (talk) 19:51, 17 November 2025 (UTC)
- I came here looking for this information, so it seems appropriate. Thanks for your work! JimboCoolfruits (talk) 23:05, 17 November 2025 (UTC)
- I came here looking for this too, it looks like he will pause public roles after the Epstein emails leaked, it seems important enough to mention. Nordinha (talk) 11:19, 18 November 2025 (UTC)

- All other major publications are mentioning this. Nordinha (talk) 11:21, 18 November 2025 (UTC)
- He just resigned from OpenAI's board due to the Epstein emails: https://www.cnbc.com/2025/11/19/larry-summers-epstein-openai.html
- I believe this needs to be added. Nordinha (talk) 14:28, 19 November 2025 (UTC)

Add section on controversy:
Following the release of documents detailing his years-long correspondence with Jeffrey Epstein, former Treasury Secretary Larry Summers announced he would be stepping back from public commitments, stating he is "deeply ashamed" of his actions. The emails, which spanned from 2017 to early 2019, revealed a friendly and personal relationship, with Epstein even referring to himself as Summers's "wing man" in one exchange where the Harvard professor sought advice on a romantic pursuit. While maintaining his teaching duties at Harvard, Summers has resigned or withdrawn from affiliations with several prominent think tanks and organizations, as he stated he takes "full responsibility" for his "misguided decision" to maintain contact with the convicted sex offender long after Epstein's 2008 guilty plea.

- I would tone that down a bit and propose this instead: "Following the release of documents detailing his correspondence with Jeffrey Epstein, Summers announced in November 2025 that he is stepping back from public commitments. In a statement, he wrote that he is "deeply ashamed" of his actions. The Epstein/Summers emails spanned from 2017 to early 2019 and revealed a friendly and personal relationship. Epstein referred to himself as Summers's "wing man" in an exchange where the Harvard professor sought advice on a romantic pursuit. Summers said he will continue to teach at Harvard, but will resign or withdraw from his affiliations with several think tanks and organizations. He said he is taking "full responsibility" for his "misguided decision" to maintain contact with Epstein after the convicted sex offender's 2008 guilty plea." Not done: Some of this information is already present in the subsection entitled "Connection to Jeffrey Epstein". Please propose an edit to/expansion of that section rather than an entirely new one. I would also suggest finding a better source than Forbes. Day Creature (talk) 19:48, 18 November 2025 (UTC)

Lawrence Summers → Larry Summers – While "Lawrence Summers" is his chosen name in academic publications, he is a public figure far more commonly known as "Larry". The hypocorism "Larry" is far more frequently used in secondary media.[1][2][3][4] Google Trends shows a 20-fold increase in searches for "Larry" over "Lawrence" over the previous 12 months and a 12-fold margin over the previous 30 days. Searches for "Lawrence H. Summers" are negligible compared to both.[5][6] MB2437 16:34, 4 December 2025 (UTC) — Relisting. Jeffrey34555 (talk) 16:39, 11 December 2025 (UTC)
