Expand this template to include all of Asia or restrict it to East Asia only
[edit]I believe this template should be expanded to cover the whole of Asia or be restricted to East Asia only. My arguments for this is that there is too much overlap with other Asian regions through the inclusion of articles like Buddhist democracy, Islamic democracy, Monarchism#Asia, Asia Pacific Democracy Union, Eastern philosophy, Fascism in Asia and Ultraconservatism#Asia. There is also no logical explanation as to why East and Southeast Asia should be grouped together when they are two separate regions. I suggest expanding this to cover all of Asia as per Template:Conservatism in Europe or scaling it back to only cover East Asia. I've tagged @ProgramT: to hear their opinion. - Opposition; East Asia and Southeast Asia share the same Buddhist cultural sphere and have also been influenced to a certain extent by China. Therefore, they are quite different from regions like the Middle East or India. Islamic culture in Southeast Asia is different from Islamic culture in the Middle East. "Asian values" are conservative principles shared with both East and Southeast Asia, which are not shared in the Middle East and India. ProgramT (talk) 08:51, 12 February 2026 (UTC)
- Hi @ProgramT:, thanks for your reply. Unfortunately I have to respectfully disagree. As I said, there is so much overlap in the articles you have linked with other Asian regions such as the article on Fascism in Asia. The articles I mentioned also cover regions in other parts of Asia beyond East and Southeast Asia. So that in itself supports the argument that the template has too much overlap with other parts of Asia to stand as a separate template covering two different regions lumped together.
- In response to your reply, Buddhism originated in India and it's a religion that is also practiced in South Asia (where it is the majority or a significant religion in three nations in South Asia). So the Buddhist cultural sphere (if there is one) actually only covers the Buddhist world and not the whole of East and Southeast Asia. China culturally influenced the nations of East Asia and Vietnam (East Asian Cultural Sphere) while India culturally influenced the rest of South Asia and Southeast Asia (Indian Cultural Sphere). Asian Values was an ideology that developed in Singapore and pioneered in Malaysia, two nations that are pan-Asian in ethnicity and culture - the article states "Proponents claim the concept helped reconcile Islam, Confucianism and Hinduism in Singapore and Malaysia, and was unifying because it was different to the philosophy of the West". There are sources dating to the 1990s that explain the impact of Asian Values across Asia as a whole, not just East and Southeast Asia. There is actually no credible reason for why this template should only be limited to East and Southeast Asia because Southeast Asia in itself is not a cultural extension of East Asia, it's a distinct region that ended up being influenced by other parts of Asia (including the Middle East) and Western Europe. So I still believe this template should either be restricted to East Asia ONLY or expanded to cover the whole of Asia. I am happy to expand this discussion and get more opinions on it if you're still not comfortable with my suggestion. CassiaWorks (talk) 10:21, 15 February 2026 (UTC)
