Add Cost to the template

[edit]

I am not n experienced coder so I do not yet know how to code but as a suggestion, can you add a section called cost and its position is under termini. Hope you reply — Preceding unsigned comment added by Faisalisonline2 (talk • contribs) 20:54, 27 December 2025 (UTC)Reply

I'm not sure that's a good field for this template. The values will vary wildly and won't be known in many cases. What a line cost to build in (for example) 19th century dollars doesn't have much relevance for the present time. Mackensen (talk) 21:12, 27 December 2025 (UTC)Reply
Not to mention many lines were upgraded and extended over time such that the original cost is wholly irrelevant to describing the line in the present day, and making calculating a total cost not possible. Steelkamp (talk) 02:10, 28 December 2025 (UTC)Reply
Many early railways were hopelessly under-budgeted, so the initial share issue was way too small to cover the expenses as they arose. Those companies that didn't collapse found that they had to issue additional shares in order to cover the shortfall. For example, the Manchester and Leeds Railway, which in the planning stage in June 1831 was estimated to cost between £700,000 and £800,000, was authorised in July 1836 to raise £1,300,000 through share issue and a further £433,000 in loans, a total of £1,733,000 - more than double the original estimate. But even this was not enough: further legislation was required in 1841 and 1845 in order to issue additional shares. --Redrose64 🦌 (talk) 16:59, 28 December 2025 (UTC)Reply
It looks like this is a good item to put in the body of the article rather than in an infobox, since it does not lend itself to concise, accurate summation. – Jonesey95 (talk) 21:03, 28 December 2025 (UTC)Reply

Track length

[edit]

What does the tracklength param mean, can anyone provide examples of how to use it? Jjpachano (talk) 12:44, 31 March 2026 (UTC)Reply

Description of suggested change: Change "Commenced" to "Work began", like at Template:Infobox tunnel. "Commenced" is vague and readers could confuse it with when the rail line opened rather than when work began. I have asked about this at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Trains/Archive: 2025#Proposed change to Template:Infobox rail line but received limited response, with one support and one neutral.

Diff:

−
label31 = Commenced
+
label31 = Work began

 Completed – I'm inclined to agree with your reasoning due to its usage in the tunnel ibox and to the discussion at the WikiProject Trains talk page. So let's see if it's sustainable. P.I. Ellsworth , ed. – welcome! – 07:30, 19 August 2026 (UTC)Reply

I don't exactly know how to fix this but I'll explain the problem. If the infobox uses a collapsible item, such as map parameter, the navbox (if there is one) on the article is automatically collapsed – it shouldn't do that. See Wrocław–Poznań railway or Węgliniec–Görlitz railway for example. {{Infobox station}} previously had the exact same issue and it was fixed in this discussion. I don't have time to tackle this right now but this is what was done to fix the issue on Infobox station: Special:Diff/1362054108. Mackensen (talk) 12:20, 30 September 2026 (UTC)Reply
It's a feature of the MediaWiki software that if there are two or more elements with either the collapsible or mw-collapsible class, they're linked. If the element also has the autocollapse class - such as all navboxes - the presence of another collapsible element causes all of them to collapse. See Help:Collapsing tables and more. --Redrose64 🌹 (talk) 20:06, 30 September 2026 (UTC)Reply
Would it be possible to give navboxes a separate class then? Would bring this up at WP:VPT because that would probably be the best idea here. Fortek67 (talk) 07:47, 1 October 2026 (UTC)Reply
