[edit]Hello! Voting in the 2025 Arbitration Committee elections is now open until 23:59 (UTC) on Monday, 1 December 2025. All eligible users are allowed to vote. Users with alternate accounts may only vote once.
The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.
If you wish to participate in the 2025 election, please review the candidates and submit your choices on the voting page. If you no longer wish to receive these messages, you may add {{NoACEMM}} to your user talk page. MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 00:46, 18 November 2025 (UTC)
Romanization
[edit]Hello, thank you for your work on List of Korean independence activists. Just a note about WP:KOREANNAME; we generally use McCune–Reischauer for historical people. We also discourage ad-hoc romanizations like "hyun"; in Revised Romanization that's actually supposed to be "hyeon". Hyphens in given names are also discouraged in both MR and RR. Please let me know if you have any questions about this. grapesurgeon (talk) 06:16, 15 December 2025 (UTC)
- 안녕 @Grapesurgeon, thanks for the heads up. I addressed the issue with Hwang Hyeon but otherwise left the names on the list as I found them.
- Separate (but related) question that often arises with Korean names: how can one can prevent Template:Interlanguage link (III) from linking to an irrelevant article under the same name on English Wikipedia? I'm specifically referring to how using that template for the Korean independence activist 이재명 (born 1887) automatically links to Lee Jae Myung, the modern politician, because their names are indexed the same. I've run into this issue previously when linking to the Korean Wikipedia articles of more obscure historical figures. Dobok (talk) 04:10, 18 December 2025 (UTC)
{{ill|Yi Chaemyŏng (activist)|ko|이재명 (독립운동가)|lt=Yi Chaemyŏng}}grapesurgeon (talk) 04:41, 18 December 2025 (UTC)- Also to reiterate; again for historical people we mostly use McCune–Reischauer. If you're not sure how to use that system, use the template {{Ko-translit}} with an
%before the name. For example,{{Ko-translit|mr|%이재명}}→Yi Chaemyŏng. - Even besides just the "myung"/"myeong" issue, there's lots of other names that were added that should be converted to MR grapesurgeon (talk) 04:55, 18 December 2025 (UTC)
- Thanks for the reminder, but I myself would like to repeat that I left the names as I found them. I recognize your concerns about standardizing systems per Wikipedia guidelines, but to clear things up, I didn't produce the majority of the romanizations on that page.
- In all honesty, I alphabetized that page for my own ease of use for a non-Wikipedia personal interest project of mine, as the previous state of the page was disorganized (to say the least) and full of duplicate names. So with this, I mean to say that while I am totally willing to adhere to the MR system, and might get to it eventually, it's not at the top of my to-do list right now. I hope you understand.
- An aside: I am familiar with the McCune–Reischauer system, as I am of Korean background myself and one of my family members actually studied under Reischauer. Dobok (talk) 05:33, 18 December 2025 (UTC)
- Oh my bad, I didn't catch that detail in your prev comment. I also thought you had added new names yourself using those ad-hoc romanizations, and that it wasn't just sorting. My fault! grapesurgeon (talk) 15:58, 18 December 2025 (UTC)
