Questions from The Transhumanist (Wednesday, 18 February 2026)

[edit]

Some more questions about AI...

A lot has happened in the last few months.

AI is advancing rapidly. It could be that we are already in the midst of an intelligence explosion, in that AI developers are using AI to improve AI. So, AI is, in a sense, already engaged in recursive self-improvement with the aid of humans.

Major software companies report that more than 25% of their code is AI-written, even higher for AI firms such as OpenAI and Anthropic. This of course, is driving the acceleration of AI, which is noticeably more capable each month.

Have you been using AI? Do you have a sense of the impact it will have on Wikipedia? What do you foresee?

Sincerely,    — The Transhumanist   14:56, 18 February 2026 (UTC)[reply]

Hey @The Transhumanist, hope you're well!
I don't use AI for anything Wikipedia-related as I still worry about the accuracy issues with factual texts and hallucinations, with the one exception of developing my Edit Requests Dashboard, I've used AI on one function there that was driving me crazy (although I found that was a battle to get it to do it right). I use AI sometimes at work, especially to help spot small issues in big texts and reword emails to make them sound more corporate which I find very helpful being new to that world.
As for Wikipedia I think it will be used here more, but I still think many people here are cautious of it (myself included). Mainly due to the issues it can have with accuracy, and I found that AI sometimes tells me what I want to hear, not what is correct which stops me from adopting it more. I think that if AI is to be used here, it MUST be proof-read and fact-checked first.
Hope that helps, Encoded  Talk 💬 21:00, 18 February 2026 (UTC)[reply]
I was thinking more along the lines of competition that AI could pose to Wikipedia over time: 1) Creation of AI-edited encyclopedias, with Grokipedia being an early example, and 2) the emergence of ability to produce treatments on any subject nearly instantaneously that rival Wikipedia articles in length, scope, articulation, and accuracy. The progression toward the latter is already costing Wikipedia significant traffic, as chatbots increasingly negate the need to consult Wikipedia for answers and topic-related information. Due to the resistance of the Wikipedia community to embrace AI, it does not look likely that Wikipedia the encyclopedia will be positioned to adapt to a rapidly approaching AI-powered society. I'm sure there are other factors I'm missing. In a nutshell, I guess the issue I'm groping for here is the "potential for Wikipedia to be leapfrogged", as it leapfrogged and obsoleted nearly all of the general encyclopedias that came before it. I'm trying to understand this issue and hone my articulation of it well enough to be able to start discussions at the Village Pump and Wikimedia forums. Any advice you can provide would be most appreciated, including ideas for titles to such threads. How's "How will Wikipedia be able to compete with AI-generated responses in the future?" It seems lacking. The main thing I want to avoid is starting discussions that devolve into debates on whether or not AI will ever be able to edit Wikipedia up to WP standards, as leapfrogging by external content generation apps competing with WP (and the loss of web traffic that that will cause) is the clearest existential threat to Wikipedia. That's the focus I'm shooting for. Suggestions?    — The Transhumanist   01:51, 19 February 2026 (UTC)[reply]
I think Wikipedia is such a big resource and a household name that it won't ever fade away in my opinion. I do think people will adapt which tools they use, but I don't think WP will disappear Encoded  Talk 💬 22:30, 2 March 2026 (UTC)[reply]

Question from RakeshMGanesan (03:05, 1 March 2026)

[edit]

Hi Encoded . I edited two pages of Pokémon episodes on 28 February 2026 and edited the episodes which were removed or banned from broadcasting on English episode television but i got a message saying that i violated some terms of editing the page. These episodes are banned from all Pokémon season league and i edited them saying that they were banned episodes and this was the message - Media Mender‬ left a message on your talk page in "‪Welcome‬". Latest revision as of 17:54, 28 February 2026 Welcome Hello RakeshMGanesan and welcome to Wikipedia! We appreciate encyclopedic contributions, but some of your contributions do not conform to our policies. For more information on this, see Wikipedia's policies on acceptable additions. If you'd like to experiment with the wiki's syntax, please do so in the sandbox (but beware that the contents of the sandbox are deleted frequently) rather than in articles. If you still have questions, there is a Help desk, or you can click here to ask for help on your talk page, and a volunteer should respond shortly. Please sign your name on talk pages using four tildes (RakeshMGanesan (talk) 03:05, 1 March 2026 (UTC)); this will automatically produce your name Just advise me what does N/A mean in an episode list if it banned and what will people understand from it and if i edited it to banned episode. Just advise me on how to go about this editing thing because if you check it here - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pok%C3%A9mon:_Indigo_League there are some episodes missing and they are banned in English then it should be written as banned or N/A. it is available in Japanese with subtitles but people prefer it in English to hear so i am asking you this question. kindly suggest me on how to got about it.[reply]

Hi @RakeshMGanesan, I'd recommend reaching out to Media Mender directly as I'm not too familiar with the topic myself. From what I can remember I believe N/A stands for "Not Aired" on here. If the banned episode was never aired I think it would be appropriate to add N/A, otherwise if it was aired but later banned I'm not too sure what the correct way is, apologies! Fred "Disco" Brown

[edit]

How can his draft page be properly reviewed for who he is and his contributions, honors, accomplishments in the game of basketball. Junior College All Region XVII/All Conference (1981), VCU 1983 All Sunbelt Conference 2nd Team, Sunbelt Player of the Week,1983 Times Dispatch All Virginia Team, 1983 Basketball Weekly vol 16 All Atlantic Coast Region Honorable Mention, ESPN 1983 Owens Corning Amateur Athlete Award, 1982-83 season Eastern Airlines Player of the Game as seen on Sports Channel twice (January 23, February 19, 1983), NCAA CBS Chevrolet Most Valuable Player of the Game and Week vs Georgia during the 1983 NCAA Tournament seen on CBS, 1983 Teams 2nd leading scorer, Teams leading rebounder and Field Goal percentage leader. 1983 Prestigious Team Before Self Award for individual sacrifice for team success, 1983 NBA Draft pick of the Phoenix Suns, 1984 Interworld All Star Tour of Asia Selection with team members Earl Monroe, Pete Maverich, Rick Barry, Bobby Dandridge, Cazzie Russell, Connie Hawkins, Phil Jackson, Mel Davis, Dennis Awtry. Some Former NBA All Stars, later some Naismith Hall of Famers, then some selected to the 50 greatest players of all time now 75. Distinct recognition highlights the high regard of Fred Disco Browns, talent and potential being the youngest player and only active Pro Prospect early in his professional career. Inducted into Pro Rucker Hall of Fame (2007) and EBC (Entertainers Basketball Classic) At Rucker Park Hall of Fame 2021. At VCU 1981-83 playing under one of the most impressive coaching staffs (1979-85) in the nation, VCU in 6 years winning 4 Sunbelt Conference Regular Season Championships, 3 Sunbelt Conference Tournament Championships and 5 NCAA appearances losing 4 second round games by 2 points or less to teams that reached the final four. J.D. Barnett Head Coach, Assistants Tubby Smith, Dave Hobbs, Jim Snuffy Smith and Mike Sutton. Fred was one of Tubby Smiths first major recruits early in his career as an assistant at VCU. Alumni (VCU) noted on Ram Nation that Fred Brown was one of Coach Barnetts greatest shortcomings. Fred a creative, explosive guard at 6'4 with a 44-inch vertical and pro level potential was often stifled, played out of position but none the less remained a key contributor to nationally recognized VCU Teams that reached the NCAA Tournament. Tubby went on to win a NCAA National Championship and become one of college basketball's all-time great coaches. Dave Hobbs (Alabama) and Mike Sutton (Tennessee Tech) had success as Head coaches and later NBA Scouts. Beyond the court Fred Disco Brown continued to impact communities as an advisor, consultant and mentor to youth organizations, including programs that integrate basketball with life skills, supporting initiatives that promote education, inclusion and character development. Shaped by the influence of accomplished coaches, respected mentors and highly accomplished peers Fred Disco Brown emerged from one of the most competitive environments in the world. New York City's Legendary playground, NCAA Basketball, NBA Draft, International Sports, then the famed historical site Rucker Park. Fred Disco Brown should absolutely have a Wikipedia page and documented history available in one place, preserving his story. A player whose talent and contributions deserve recognition within the broader history of New York basketball. ~2026-14338-52 (talk) 20:00, 5 March 2026 (UTC)[reply]
