[edit]hiking mountains
Thank you for quality articles around the Geology of the Rocky Mountains and Lake Sammamish State Park, for improving and fixing templates, for welcoming and advising users, for your contributions from 2003 saying "the best part of editing WP is when several editors cooperate to make a high-quality article", such as The Three Sisters, - you are an awesome Wikipedian!

DYK for Carlo Rinaldini
[edit]On 19 June 2025, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Carlo Rinaldini, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that 17th-century mathematician Carlo Rinaldini studied gall-inducing insects, air convection, and the design of thermometers? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Carlo Rinaldini. You are welcome to check how many pageviews the nominated article or articles got while on the front page (here's how, Carlo Rinaldini), and the hook may be added to the statistics page after its run on the Main Page has completed. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page.

Good news!
[edit]Run this search: hastemplate:"infobox Australian place" insource:/\|\s*type\s*=\s*protected/. I converted all of them so one less thing to worry about with the conversion of {{Infobox Australian place}} Zackmann (Talk to me/What I been doing) 05:24, 6 October 2025 (UTC)
- Woo hoo! Thanks for doing that! — hike395 (talk) 05:50, 6 October 2025 (UTC)
- It was actually surprisingly easy. I basically just mapped the params and made a substitution template at User:Zackmann08/australia subst. Then all I had to do was subst it in place with WP:JWB and Bob's your uncle!!

Infobox writer
[edit]I was about to convert {{Infobox writer}} to wrap {{Infobox person}} but looks like you beat me to it in the sandbox. Are you still working on that? Can I help in any way? - Zackmann (Talk to me/What I been doing) 20:50, 21 October 2025 (UTC)
- @Zackmann08: I converted it, but there was pushback (see the talk page), so I stopped. — hike395 (talk) 01:39, 22 October 2025 (UTC)
HELP!
[edit]So when you log on, you are going to have about 10 notifications from me and I'm sorry. We are involved in multiple discussions right now... When you get a chance, after you have cleared all your other notifications, can you possibly look at User:Zackmann08/mapframe and help me understand what is going on? I can't figure out why the call to {{Infobox mapframe}} is doing something different than the built-in call to Module:Infobox mapframe that comes from {{Infobox settlement}}.
Your help is greatly appreciated! Zackmann (Talk to me/What I been doing) 18:47, 27 October 2025 (UTC)
- @Zackmann08: there has been a lot of churn. Do you still need my help? — hike395 (talk) 15:43, 1 November 2025 (UTC)
- Yep. I'm trying to figure out why I'm getting two different maps on User:Zackmann08/mapframe. Zackmann (Talk to me/What I been doing) 19:39, 1 November 2025 (UTC)
- @Zackmann08: If we ignore the different zoom and marker, it's because you're using
|frame-lat=and|frame-long=. These are deprecated parameters that are not equivalent to setting|coordinates=. The mapframe on the left is with the deprecated parameters, the mapframe on the second is with coordinates:

| Using deprecated parameters | Setting only coordinates | Setting coords, point=no, shape=yes | Don't set coordinates |
When you set coordinates, you are telling infobox mapframe to use those coordinates as a point, so it sets a point marker and ignores the shape. If you want to set coordinates and use the wikidata shape, then you have to say |point=no and |shape=yes (the third map, above). Another method is to not set the coordinates -- {{Infobox mapframe}} will look it up in Wikidata anyway, so don't specify it, and you will get the Wikidata shape (the fourth map, above). Hope this helps. — hike395 (talk) 20:38, 1 November 2025 (UTC)

Temporary account IP viewer granted
[edit]
Hello, Hike395. Per your request, your account has been granted temporary-account-viewer rights. You are now able to reveal the IP addresses of individuals using temporary accounts that are not visible to the general public. This is very sensitive information that is only to be used to aid in anti-abuse workflows. Please take a moment to review Wikipedia:Temporary account IP viewer for more information on this user right. It is important to remember:
- You must not share IP address data with someone who does not have the same access permissions unless disclosure is permissible as per guidelines listed at Foundation:Policy:Wikimedia Access to Temporary Account IP Addresses Policy.
- Access must not be used for political control, to apply pressure on editors, or as a threat against another editor in a content dispute. There must be a valid reason to investigate a temporary user. Note that using multiple temporary accounts is not forbidden, so long as they are not used in violation of policies (for example, block or ban evasion).
It is also important to note that the following actions are logged for others to see:
- When a user accepts the preference that enables or disables IP reveal for their account.
- Revealing an IP address of a temporary account.
- Listing the temporary accounts that are associated with one or more IP addresses (using the CIDR notation format).
Remember, even if a user is violating policy, avoid revealing personal information if possible. Use temporary account usernames rather than disclosing IP addresses directly, or give information such as same network/not same network or similar. If you do not want the user right anymore then please ask me or another administrator and it will be removed for you. You may also voluntarily give up access at any time by visiting Special:Preferences. Happy editing! – robertsky (talk) 11:57, 5 November 2025 (UTC)

Yet more mapframe help
[edit]Can you help me understand why this edit resulted in the mapframe marker being moved? I was understand the impression that changing the coordinates to pull from wikidata would resolve the issue, but it still doesn't line up... What am I missing? Thanks in advance! Zackmann (Talk to me/What I been doing) 20:54, 23 November 2025 (UTC)
- I'm not 100% sure: this is mysterious behavior by Kartographer. As far as I can tell, in the older version, Kartographer (somehow?) picked up the coordinates from OSM here, which is linked back to d:Q3430285, while in the newer version, it did not. — hike395 (talk) 23:02, 23 November 2025 (UTC)
Facepalm why is this so confusing?!?!?! RAGE QUIT lol. Thanks for helping me trace this down. I'm sorry I keep pinging you with dumb questions, you just understand this SO much better than I do... Zackmann (Talk to me/What I been doing) 00:08, 24 November 2025 (UTC)
- @Zackmann08 My guess is that when Kartographer has no local coordinates given, and there is a both a Wikidata coord and a node ID, then Kartographer prefers the node coordinates to the Wikidata coords — hike395 (talk) 04:10, 24 November 2025 (UTC)
Category displaying issue
[edit]I'm not certain about this, so forgive me if I'm incorrect, but is it possible your edit to Template:Category link if exists has caused multiple templates of "by year/by decade" to be reporting an unclosed bolding error and be displaying as '*******' (round dots not asterisks, but you get the idea) like that of Category:States and territories disestablished in the 2020s or as |_______|' on anime templates like Template:Animanga by year category header?
I think these should be displaying as 1900 * 1910 * 1920 * 1930 .... or the like, but instead are just showing the list separating characters and the content is not displaying between them. This has been the only page so far that I've spotted connecting Olympics and Geography categories to Anime categories with an edit last night, so figured it was worth asking about. Zinnober9 (talk) 22:07, 24 November 2025 (UTC)
- Thanks. It's certainly possible that I introduced a bug. Let me rewind. — hike395 (talk) 22:55, 24 November 2025 (UTC)
- The error reports in category are starting to depopulate, so looks like that was the cause. Thanks for checking! Zinnober9 (talk) 23:11, 24 November 2025 (UTC)

CIA World Factbook
[edit]At these edits: Ethiopia and Europe you created cs1|2 errors by including both |website= and |work= parameters. These parameters are aliases of each other so only one is allowed in any single cs1|2 template. I think that |work=CIA World Factbook should be preferred over |website=cia.gov or |website=CIA.gov.

Deprecated nationality
[edit]Was going to revert this edit as I imagine it is creating a bunch of unneeded red categories. Since the parameter is deprecated across the board for all wrappers, why not just keep them all in one category? Zackmann (Talk to me/What I been doing) 03:22, 21 February 2026 (UTC)
- @Zackmann08: I just finished creating the categories about 1 minute ago. In my experience, when a tracking category has a huge number of entries, it never gets fixed: it's too intimidating. Breaking it down encourages people to start to fix things. I was just about to nibble away at these. — hike395 (talk) 03:25, 21 February 2026 (UTC)
- Fair enough. As long as they are documented. (I recommend adding {{Infobox tracking categories}}) I've got a JWB script I'm running while watching the olympics... At least until my thumb gets tired.
Zackmann (Talk to me/What I been doing) 03:31, 21 February 2026 (UTC)
- I used {{Deprecated parameters category}} to all 24 of the tracking categories, which I believe you created. — hike395 (talk) 03:35, 21 February 2026 (UTC)
- I did! Sorry what I meant is you can use {{Infobox tracking categories}} on documentation pages. Zackmann (Talk to me/What I been doing) 03:36, 21 February 2026 (UTC)
- Oh gosh, that would have been handy. I just manually added the deprecated parameter category to all 24 doc pages.
- I just thought of another good reason to break these out. I want to double-check that
|nationality=isn't actually used in any of the wrapper templates. Implicit parameters inherited from {{Infobox person}} are much less controversial to delete. Explicit documented parameters should probably be left alone until they're discussed at the corresponding Talk page. — hike395 (talk) 03:42, 21 February 2026 (UTC)- Well now you know for next time! Good point there. Zackmann (Talk to me/What I been doing) 03:43, 21 February 2026 (UTC)
