WikiCup 2023 September newsletter
[edit]The fourth round of the competition has finished, with anyone scoring less than 673 points being eliminated. It was a high scoring round with all but one of the contestants who progressed to the final having achieved an FA during the round. The highest scorers were
Epicgenius, with 2173 points topping the scores, gained mainly from a featured article, 38 good articles and 9 DYKs. He was followed by
Sammi Brie, with 1575 points, gained mainly from a featured article, 28 good articles and 50 good article reviews. Close behind was
Thebiguglyalien, with 1535 points mainly gained from a featured article, 15 good articles, 26 good article reviews and lots of bonus points.
Between them during round 4, contestants achieved 12 featured articles, 3 featured lists, 3 featured pictures, 126 good articles, 46 DYK entries, 14 ITN entries, 67 featured article candidate reviews and 147 good article reviews. Congratulations to our eight finalists and all who participated! It was a generally high-scoring and productive round and I think we can expect a highly competitive finish to the competition.
Remember that any content promoted after the end of round 4 but before the start of round 5 can be claimed in round 5. Remember too that you must claim your points within 10 days of "earning" them and within 24 hours of the end of the final. If you are concerned that your nomination will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews. It would be helpful if this list could be cleared of any items no longer relevant. If you want to help out with the WikiCup, please do your bit to keep down the review backlogs! Questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages or by email. If you wish to start or stop receiving this newsletter, please feel free to add or remove your name from Wikipedia:WikiCup/Newsletter/Send.
I will be standing down as a judge after the end of the contest. I think the Cup encourages productive editors to improve their contributions to Wikipedia and I hope that someone else will step up to take over the running of the Cup. Sturmvogel 66 (talk), and Cwmhiraeth (talk)
Holiday Greetings
[edit]
Peace is a state of balance and understanding in yourself and between others, where respect is gained by the acceptance of differences, tolerance persists, conflicts are resolved through dialog, people's rights are respected and their voices are heard, and everyone is at their highest point of serenity without social tension. Happy Holidays to you and yours. Always a pleasure to see your work. ―Buster7 ☎

You are invited to participate in the Destubathon of the Americas, a contest/editathon which will run from May 1 to May 31. The goal is to destub as many of our 475,000+ stubs for the Americas (from Alaska down to Chile) as possible. A good chance to have fun in expanding many of our old stale stubs and win up to £2000 ($2680) in Amazon vouchers for expanding stub articles. Sign up in the Contestants/participants section on the contest page if interested. Even if not interested in prizes you are still warmly welcome to participate in it as an editathon! Hopefully we can achieve something significant in the month of May together! ♦ Dr. Blofeld 17:20, 15 April 2026 (UTC)

Plus, new bans for AI-generated content in place, a new drop in active admins, pranks on pranks, May admin election, and other news from the Wikimedia world.

Disruption
[edit]Hi, I could use some advice on an issue at Talk:War_in_Abkhazia_(1992–1993)#Verification_problems. Two days ago, an anonymous editor added 17k characters to that article. When I spot-checked the additions, I found claims not supported by sources. I raised it at the talk but the discussion doesn't seem to be going anywhere. The anonymous editor I've been discussing it with has three times avoided my direct question about whether they were the one who made the original edit. I noticed that their talk page comments have language errors while the content they added didn't have them which makes me wonder about its source. What would be the best course of action for me now? Alaexis¿question? 22:00, 22 April 2026 (UTC)
- Alaexis, so it could be LLM, could be a WP:CIR issue. WP:ANI is the place to go. – Muboshgu (talk) 00:16, 23 April 2026 (UTC)
Curious, would you object to moving this to 2000 Illinois's 1st congressional district Democratic primary and rescoping slightly? The only notable aspect of this election is the primary; the general is adequately covered at 2000 United States House of Representatives elections#Illinois. I'm aware it's weird to have an article on the primary and not on the general, but it would better serve readers here.
Reaching out to you as this is an edit I'd BOLDly make otherwise if the article wasn't a GA (and you're the one who took it to GA). Elli (talk | contribs) 23:25, 22 April 2026 (UTC)
- Elli, I appreciate you reaching out. I see why you would do this, but I disagree. I get that the primary is the main event in dark red and dark blue districts, but really it's the November election that has notability, even given the differences in that case. - Elli, looking at that article again, it needs prose on the general election. I didn't realize it didn't have any. – Muboshgu (talk) 00:43, 23 April 2026 (UTC)
- Yeah, this is why I was thinking it made sense to scope to the primary -- I don't think there's really much to write about the general (though it could perhaps be expanded a bit -- and we really should have 2000 United States House of Representatives elections in Illinois to cover that info for this and other races in the state that year). In any case, I've opened an RM. Elli (talk | contribs) 00:50, 23 April 2026 (UTC)
