Thanks, but ...

[edit]

Thanks for your edits to Dune Messiah and other articles, un-capitalizing links to common nouns. I'm not sure if you're using AWB or doing it manually, but you should be changing the link itself (hardcover & paperback) rather than piping it (hardcover & paperback), as this is redundant and a bot or another editor will have to fix it later. Thanks again! — TAnthonyTalk 16:00, 23 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Hello and good afternoon (at least it is afternoon where I am). I was looking at the Wikipedian firefighters category and noticed that you are one of the members of the Wikipedia community that lists yourself as being a firefighter. First and foremost let me say thank you for your service. While I myself am not a firefighter, I do work as a photographer with multiple local fire departments. I am honored to have firefighters as some of my closest friends.

I have been taking an active role in the Fire Service WikiProject and am trying to recruit more members to this cause. If this is something you have any interest in, please let me know? You can leave me a message on my talk page. Obviously there is zero obligation. An interest can be anything from helping out with a couple of pages in your local area to helping to overhaul major templates, and anything in between.

Once again, thank you for your service. Hope to hear from you soon. Stay safe! --Zackmann08 (talk) 17:54, 10 April 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Before you go on

[edit]

Before you go on decapitalizing more dog breeds, please note that there was a discussion on this subject. Could you please discuss this topic at the Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Dogs about it. We had an agreement before not to do this, here https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Talk:Labrador_Retriever/Archive_3#Requested_move. There were many heated discussions on this topic, I think it would be good to have a consensus before we start decapitalizing the dog breeed articles. Cheers. Earth

[edit]

Hi Nyq: According to Wikipedia's manual of style, capitalizing the planet name "Earth" shouldn't be done in the bird migration article. Specifically, it says "The words sun, earth, moon and solar system are capitalized (as proper names) when used to refer to a specific celestial body in an astronomical context (The Sun is the star at the center of the Solar System; the Moon orbits Earth). They are not capitalized when used outside an astronomical context (It was a clear day and the sun felt warm), or when used in a general sense (Io is a moon of Jupiter)." Ping me if you disagree, and we can get the MOS boffins to have a look at that particular article. MeegsC (talk) 09:11, 3 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Agreed and thank you, my mistake. Nyq (talk) 11:21, 3 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]

In a lost cause there are no failures

[edit]

I've been fighting a losing battle for decades against misuse of plural forms as singular, leading to such abominations as "item of data" instead of the simple "datum". I'm glad that I'm not the only one ;-) -- Shmuel (Seymour J.) Metz Username:Chatul (talk) 12:42, 30 September 2025 (UTC)[reply]

You are not alone indeed. On a bright side, not all of these battles are losing ones. For instance, a few years ago we have managed to rid Wikipedia of capitalization of vernacular species names that were especially abundant in bird-related articles. It was not an organized effort, just enough of stubborn and pedantic editors who happened to do the same thing at the same time. On the other hand, we failed to prevail in a similar battle against idiotic overcapitalization of dog breed names that is pushed by AKC for marketing purposes (as if breeds are their proprietary product names). AKC has brainwashed so many dog owners that any attempt to decapitalize a breed name is met with a lot of anger and immediate rollbacks. Finally, let's not forget about our hero, User:Giraffedata, who has been consistently cleansing Wikipedia of much dreaded "comprised of" for years and hopefully continues to do so. So indeed, we are not alone. Nyq (talk) 14:58, 30 September 2025 (UTC)[reply]
I'm still on that job. 19 years in, it's getting easier, as fewer Wikipedia editors are using comprise for compose now.
By the way, you used "pedantic" to mean perfectionist, which is not its true meaning. Pedantic (related to pedagogy), is showing off. A pedantic editor doesn't insist on not capitalizing species names; he just wants you to know he knows a detail of capitalization that you don't. (And no, I'm not being pedantic here, but I may be being perfectionist). Bryan Henderson (giraffedata) (talk) 03:17, 6 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]
@Giraffedata: You are correct, a dictionary article for the word "pedantic" indeed has only negative meanings. Thank you for correcting me! Nyq (talk) 03:49, 6 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]
