Sy temperatuur, wat tussen dié van 'n rooisuperreus en geelhiperreus lê, het daartoe gelei dat dit soms as 'n rooihiperreus[11][12] en ander kere as 'n geelhiperreus beskou word.[13][14]
Die omvang van RW Cephei se magnitude is aanvanklik aangegee as 8,2-8,8 volgens fotografiese plate,[16] terwyl latere studies dit bepaal het as 8,6-10,7,[17][9] met die aanmerking dat die maksimum en minimum nie met sekerheid vasgestel kan word nie.[17]
Die ster word geklassifiseer as 'n halfgereelde veranderlike ster, wat beteken dit is 'n geelreus of -superreus waarvan die helderheid stadig wissel. Die General Catalogue of Variable Stars haal 'n studie van 1952 aan wat 'n pulseringstydperk van sowat 346 dae aangee,[17][9] terwyl ander studies verskillende tydperke aangee.[18]
In Desember 2022 is berig die ster het 'n groot verdowwing ondergaan en 'n lae magnitude van 7,6 bereik.[12][19] Dit is vermoedelik weens kort tydperke van groot massaverlies wat gelei het tot die kondensasie van die stof wat die stellêre fotosfeer gedeeltelik verberg.[7] Die voorval word vergelyk met die groot verdowwing van Betelgeuse laat in 2019[7][12][19][20] en die verdowwings wat gesien is in die historiese ligkurwe van VY Canis Majoris.[7]
Vorige waarnemings met die gebruik van fotografiese plate in 1948 en 1951 het 'n soortgelyke verdowwing van magnitude 9,16 tot 9,5 onthul, wat gevolg is deur 'n vinnige verheldering tot by magnitude 8,9.[21]
Die ster toon aansienlike bewyse van sirkumstellêre materiaal in sy spektrum.[22][23] Die IRAS-laeresolusiespektrum toon tekens van opties digte silikaatemissies by 10 en 18 μm,[24] 'n aanduiding van groot massaverlies.[23]
Die huidige massaverlies van RW Cephei word bepaal op 7×10−6 M☉ per jaar.[7] Ontledings het daarop gedui dat die ster sowat 95-140 jaar gelede die einde van 'n tydperk van vergrote massaverlies bereik het.[7]
