O nome científicoStenodus está formado pola unión dos elementos do latín científicosten- e -odus, tirados do grego antigo στενός stenós, "estreito", e ὀδούς, odoús, "dente", respectivamente.[4] Literalmente, "os de dentes estreitos".
Son especies de escasa pesca comercial, pero que presentan un gran potencial para o seu potencial cultivo en acuicultura, e teñen un grande interese na pesca deportiva.[12]
