Montgomery naceu o 7 de febreiro de 1958 en Frankfurt, Alemaña.[1][2] De nena viviu en Frankfurt, Alemaña; Brooklyn, Nova York; Alexandria, Virxinia; e Westfield, Nova Jersey. Graduouse en 1975 no Westfield High School e en 1979 na Universidade de Syracuse, cunha tripla especialidade con dobre título en xornalismo de revistas pola S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications e en lingua e literatura francesas e en psicoloxía da Facultade de Artes e Ciencias. Recibiu tres títulos de doutora honoris causa: un doutoramento honoris causa en letras humanas polo Keene State College en 2004 e un doutoramento honoris causa en letras humanas pola Universidade Franklin Pierce e pola Universidade do Sur de Nova Hampshire en 2011.[3]
