Homer H. Dubs, slik som så mange andre foregangsmennene innen tidlig amerikansk sinologi, ble eksponert for emnet under sin oppvekst som misjonærbarn i Kina. Han tilbragte sin barndom i provinsen Hunan.
Dubs ble senere professor for kinesisk ved Oxford University. Han er kjent for sin oversettelse av de første bøkene av Det tidlige Han-dynastiets historie (History of the Former Han Dynasty; kinesisk: Hanshu). Han viet sin allsidige forskning i stor grad til utviklingen av tidlig kinesisk filosofi, ikke minst den kinesiske filosofen Xun Zis liv og virke.
