CRED, legally known as Dreamplug Technologies Private Limited, is an Indian financial technology company headquartered in Bengaluru, Karnataka.[4][5][6] Founded in 2018 by Kunal Shah,[7][8] the company operates a platform for credit card bill payments, lending, and other payment services.[9][10] The same offers premium financial services, exclusive rewards, and lifestyle benefits. CRED is built with individual's with strong credit scores, and intends to create a community of financially responsible users [11].
As of 2026, the company was valued at around US$4.5 billion.[12]
History
[edit]Cred was started in 2018 by Kunal Shah. Cred posted losses of ₹360.31 crore in fiscal year 2020,[13] caused primarily due to high expenditure on marketing and advertising.[14] By 2021, the company reported having 5.9 million users.[15]
Early growth and expansion of CRED saw a rapid user acquisition and driven by high-octane marketing and a velvet-rope strategy that targeted credit holders who spent high amounts. By 2020, the app expanded to include CRED RentPay and CRED Cash [16].
In 2023, the firm moved towards a rewards utility to a lifestyle platform. This led to the introduction of CRED Store and CRED pay [17]. This scaled the headcount to 800+ members by the end of the year. The monetisation also had shifted to lending and commerce [18].
In March 2026, Cred received authorisation from the Reserve Bank of India to operate as a payment aggregator. At the time, the company and its subsidiaries also held licences and registrations from the Reserve Bank of India, the Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India, the Securities and Exchange Board of India, and the National Payments Corporation of India.[19]
Miten Sampat was appointed interim Chief Executive Officer of CRED following Kunal Shah's transition to Meta.[20]
Founding Story
[edit]CRED was founded in 2018 by Kunal Shah, the serial entrepreneur behind FreeCharge. Shah identified a market gap: high-credit score individuals received very less positive reinforcements help them maintain their financial discipline [21]. This prompted him to build a member-only platform that rewards payments made on-time with tokens called the 'CRED coins' to create positive reinforcements and a community for trustworthy borrowers [22].
CRED was initially a credit-card aggregator, enabling one-click payments for users with a credit score of more than 750. The required credit score was intended to ensure that it onboards customers with financial discipline and good credit [23]. Post onboarding, the customers could pay credit card bills, redeem rewards, access financial services, and monitor their credit status.[24]
The company closed one of India's largest seed rounds at 30 million dollars from investors like Sequoia and Ribbit Capital. The name CRED was chosen to denote both credibility and credit [25].
Business Model
[edit]The business model of this app is different from that of other financial service applications. It is a system with many layers, with businesses and people work together at different levels [26]. This works due to the flywheel effect, which involves three groups. These groups involve the people who pay for premium services, companies that sells things and brands, and for financial services [27]. To increase engagement with the service, many techniques such as gamification and personalisation is used by the app [28].
Though dependent on a B2C model, CRED has recently ventured into B2B services as well. The same is focused on its corporate expense management platform, Happay. This platform was acquired by CRED in 2021 for 180 million dollars [29]. However, its major streams of income and growth comes from B2C services.
The revenue model of CRED is dependent on multiple channels. These channels include affiliate income, aggregate platform for users and innovators, revenue from advertisements, transaction fees and loan revenue [30].

Marketing and reception
[edit]Cred became the official sponsor for the Indian Premier League for four years from 2020 to 2023.[67] In 2021, Cred's advertising content and videos, made in-house featuring Indian celebrities,[68][69][70] generated significant discourse in news and social media[71][72][73][74] due to its peculiarity, which was both criticized[75] and praised. Cred has received criticism for being overvalued and lacking a sound monetization strategy.[76][77]
CRED's marketing strategy also includes a range of strategies. These includes educational content, such as financial management content and trust building [78]. Creative Marketing strategies, such as quirky ads created viral and cultural moments. CRED also conducted many event-based campaigns, for IPL and other important events [79]. Multiple contests and giveaways were also organised to facilitate the marketing activities of the application. Social Media was also used as an effective marketing strategy by CRED [80]. The social media relevance of the application was driven through influencer engagements. The app was positioned for exclusive and premium customers, and CRED was positioned as an exclusive platform for people with high credit scores [81]. Through gamification and reward systems, CRED coins and exclusive offers can also be used by customers [82].
The SWOT analysis of CRED is as follows. Strength of the company is its unique value proposition, and incentivises timely payments [83]. Other strengths of CRED includes strong brand identity and reputation, and loyal and affluent user base. The weakness of CRED is limited user base, and it only serves credit card users [84]. High dependence on rewards and profitability challenges are the other main weaknesses of CRED. Opportunities during CRED includes service and market expansion, and data-driven personalisation [85]. CRED can also use partnerships and international expansions to unlock new opportunities of growth. The main threats of CRED includes intense competition, from similar fintech apps (both new and established) to increase their market value [86]. Other threats include regulatory risks and user fatigue [87].
