Story Kitchen, LLC,[1] doing business as Story Kitchen, is an American independent film and television production company founded in October 2022 by Dmitri M. Johnson and Michael Lawrence Goldberg, former founders of dj2 Entertainment.[2][3][4][5]

History

[edit]

Story Kitchen is primarily referenced as the production company working alongside the videogame studio, Crystal Dynamics, to adapt Tomb Raider's heroine, Lara Croft, into both television and film. In addition to Tomb Raider, Story Kitchen has announced partnerships to adapt additional videogames into film and television, ranging from the Indies (i.e., Reikon's Ruiner with Universal Pictures), to AA games (i.e., Sloclap's SIFU with Netflix), and AAA games (i.e., Square Enix's Just Cause with Universal Pictures).

The anime scripted drama television show, Tomb Raider: The Legend of Lara Croft, was first announced in 2021[6], followed up with the casting announcement of Hayley Atwell to voice Lara Croft.[7]

Season one premiered in 2024 and the second season premiered in 2025.[8]

In 2022, the Tomb Raider live-action film rights reverted from MGM, back to Crystal Dynamics, alongside Square Enix (as Square Enix owned the IP until the Embracer Group sale later that year).[9]

Post MGM reversion, it was incorrectly reported that Graham King, via his production company banner, GK Films, controlled the adaptation rights for film and television.[10][11] It was later clarified that Story Kitchen, not GK Films, had partnered with Crystal Dynamics to set the live-action television series, games, and feature films, with Amazon MGM.[12]

In 2024, a series order was announced by Amazon MGM, with Phoebe Waller-Bridge writing, executive producing, and showrunning,[13] and in 2025, it was announced that Sophie Turner was playing Lara Croft, Chad Hodge was now co-showrunning alongside Phoebe Waller-Bridge, and a production start date of January 19, 2026, had been confirmed.[14]

In addition, they announced their first UGC game (i.e., Roblox's Grow a Garden) to adapt.

Story Kitchen currently has a television first-look deal with Amazon MGM Studios as well as an animated film first-look deal with DreamWorks Animation.[15]

In 2025, Story Kitchen renewed their first-look television deal with Amazon MGM Studios (until September 2028).[16]
