Mentee questions
[edit]Hi Ampimd! I'm another new user mentor on the English Wikipedia. Some of those involved with the growth team features such as mentorship were looking at questions that hadn't been responded to yet to see if any mentors were inactive and needed to be marked 'away', and your talk page came up. You've got several unanswered questions on your talk page; would you like to be marked as away at this time?
It also looks like you used a large language model for some of your answers. Is there a specific reason for responding via LLM and not on your own words? I haven't found generative AI to be very useful on Wikipedia as it is rarely correct on specifics and often makes errors, and the community largely feels human answers are better (see the links at WP:AI and the essay WP:LLM).
Hope you're doing well, and happy editing ~~ Perfect4th (talk) 15:47, 1 September 2025 (UTC)
- Hello @Perfect4th, I’m doing well, how about you? Thank you for reaching out. Yes, I would like to be marked as being away. Unfortunately, I’ve had some issues beyond my control, which have reduced my activity on Wikipedia. I’m hoping to return fully next month.
- You are not wrong. I used an LLM to refine some of my responses. What I usually do is draft what I want to say and then use the tool to improve the wording. However, I will definitely read the links you shared. Thank you for pointing me to them.
- I’ve also noticed that you’ve been kindly keeping an eye on my talk page [Stalking] and helping to respond to my mentees. I sincerely appreciate that. You’re doing an amazing job. Ampimd (talk) 08:49, 11 November 2025 (UTC)
- Hello again! I'm also doing well, hope everything gets easier IRL! I will let an admin know about the away point (they're the only ones who can adjust the mentorlist .json), or you could also use your Mentor Dashboard if you like to set yourself away. I appreciate the kind words :) Happy editing! Perfect4th (talk) 18:35, 11 November 2025 (UTC)
- Thank you. I have accessed my mentor dashboard and set myself on away for the next 30 days. Thank you for the reminder. I appreciate. Ampimd (talk) 18:55, 11 November 2025 (UTC)

Question from Lui Collins (02:46, 11 November 2025)
[edit]hello, I was just notified that a page in my name had been flagged, that it needs more or better citations. Names of several musicians I've worked with in the past are shown in red. Do you know if those are the problems that are being flagged? I tried adding links to each musician's website, but my changes were reversed. Can you help me resolve this? Thanks much in advance. --Lui Collins (talk) 02:46, 11 November 2025 (UTC)
- (talk page stalker) Hello, Lui Collins! Nope, names should be linked when a Wikipedia article for the subject exists, but if not we're fine with redlinks – editors can be concerned about spam if external links are added instead. It looks like the issue raised on Lui Collins is rather about citations. It's especially important for Wikipedia to try to get information about living people right, so we try to maintain a good baseline for good quality sources and well-cited information about people. In this case, someone has noted that there aren't many good sources currently cited in that article. Based on your username it looks like you have a conflict of interest, so it would be better not to edit the article directly. However, you might be better positioned than some other editors to find good sources, so feel free to leave those on the article talk page (where editors discuss improvements to articles). See our reliable sources guideline for what to evaluate as helpful sources for Wikipedia articles. Feel free to drop by here or my talk page if you have any more questions, and happy editing, Perfect4th (talk) 03:08, 11 November 2025 (UTC)

Question from SoNature007 (03:18, 14 December 2025)
[edit]Hi, mentor. Thank you for offering to help. Does it mean my first Wikipedia article won't be approved by the community if I don't edit existing Wikipedia articles? --SoNature007 (talk) 03:18, 14 December 2025 (UTC)
- Hi SoNature007, You’re welcome. Happy to help.
- No, your first Wikipedia article will not be rejected just because you haven’t edited existing articles yet.
- Wikipedia does not have a rule that says you must edit existing articles before creating a new one. What matters most is the quality of the article, not your edit count.
- That said, having some prior edits can be helpful (but not mandatory) because it shows that you understand
- Wikipedia’s tone (neutral, encyclopaedic) - (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Neutral_point_of_view) , (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Writing_better_articles)
- How to cite reliable sources - (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Citing_sources)

Hello, good time I am Amir Mohammad Shirvani, an independent researcher from Iran. I wrote an article about the Collatz conjecture and it was indexed by the scientific community and artificial intelligence and also registered in Zenodo and OSF I wanted to register my article on Wikipedia if possible I would appreciate your guidance. Thanks --Raein83 (talk) 10:00, 24 December 2025 (UTC)
- Hello, @Raein83 Amir Mohammad Shirvani, and thank you for your message.
- Wikipedia does not publish or host original research. All content must be based on significant coverage in reliable, independent secondary sources. Registration of a paper on platforms such as Zenodo or OSF, or indexing by artificial intelligence tools, does not by itself satisfy Wikipedia’s sourcing or notability requirements.
- In addition, writing about one’s own research is considered a conflict of interest and is strongly discouraged on Wikipedia.
- If, in the future, your work on the Collatz conjecture is discussed in detail by independent, reputable academic sources (for example, scholarly journals or books), it may then be suitable for inclusion by independent editors. In the meantime, you are welcome to contribute by improving existing articles using well-established secondary sources.
- You may find the following policies helpful:

Hello, I wanted to write a infographic profile for an university located at Dhaka. Can you help me about citation? --Fkoushik2 (talk) 10:15, 24 December 2025 (UTC)
- Hello, @Fkoushik2 and thanks for your message.
- Before advising on citations, could you please clarify what you would like to do exactly? For example:
- Are you planning to create a new Wikipedia article about the university, or improve an existing one?
- By “infographic profile”, do you mean adding text content to an article, or uploading an image/graphic?
- Are you connected to the university in any way?
- Once this is clear, it will be easier to guide you on appropriate sources and citation requirements.
- Best wishes,
- — Ampim-D Ampimd (talk) 15:56, 24 December 2025 (UTC)
- Hello @Ampimd
- Thank you for your response, and I apologize for the confusion earlier. I should clarify that the subject is a secondary school, not a university.
- To answer your questions:
- I am planning to create a new Wikipedia article about this secondary school.
- By “infographic profile,” I meant adding structured text content to the article (such as history, academics, and basic profile information), not uploading an image or graphic.
- I am not currently connected to the school in any official capacity; however, I am a former student of the school.
- For reference, here is the official government website of the school to help clarify the subject:
- https://sgpmss.school.gov.bd/ Fkoushik2 (talk) 17:47, 24 December 2025 (UTC)
- Hello, and thank you for the clarification.
- Since this is a secondary school and you are planning to create a new article, there are a few important points to keep in mind.
- First, please note that most primary and secondary schools are not automatically notable for Wikipedia. To be eligible for a standalone article, the school must have received significant coverage in reliable, independent secondary sources (such as reputable newspapers, books, or academic publications), not just routine listings or mentions.
- The official government website you shared can be used as a primary source for basic factual information (for example, location, establishment date, and administration). However, it cannot by itself establish notability, and it should not be used for promotional or evaluative claims.
- Because you are a former student, this represents a potential conflict of interest. While this does not prohibit editing, it does mean you should be especially careful to write in a neutral tone and rely strictly on independent sources.
- Before creating the article, I strongly recommend:
- Searching for independent news or academic coverage of the school.
- Drafting the article in your sandbox or through Articles for Creation for review.
- Keeping the content concise, factual, and well-cited.
- Helpful pages to review:
- WP:SCHOOLOUTCOMES – Guidance on school articles
- WP:N – Notability
- WP:RS – Reliable sources
- WP:COI – Conflict of interest
- WP:AFC – Articles for Creation
- If you would like, you can share what independent sources you have found, and I can help advise whether they are suitable before you start drafting.
- Best wishes, — Ampim-D Ampimd (talk) 00:09, 25 December 2025 (UTC)

Question from Malcolm Wylie (11:59, 31 December 2025)
[edit]Hi Ampimd, I've often used wikipedia as a great source of information about all sorts of things. My father Shaun Wylie was astonished to find out that it included an article about him, and subsequently someone posted an article about my brother Keith Wylie. The reason for contacting you is that I'd like to update the article on the Scottish Watershed (referencing a book which I have recently published - Walking the British Watershed), and I'd also like to start a new article on the British Watershed. I'm aware that this platform is not to be used for self-publicity, but I think that the new article would be of as much interest as the Scottish subset. Any advice gratefully received. Thanks, Malcolm. --Malcolm Wylie (talk) 11:59, 31 December 2025 (UTC)

The article Sherouk Farhan has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:
No WP:SIGCOV found.
You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.
Please consider improving the page to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion based on established criteria.
If the proposed deletion has already been carried out, you may request undeletion of the article at any time. Svartner (talk) 19:10, 2 January 2026 (UTC)

Question from Naval.mahajan1 (07:37, 6 January 2026)
[edit]I have created a draft page on Wikipedia. When will it get published?? Does someone needs to review it first? --Naval.mahajan1 (talk) 07:37, 6 January 2026 (UTC)
- Hi Naval @(Naval.mahajan1) 👋🏾,
- Thanks for your question. Yes — draft articles on Wikipedia do not get published automatically.
- If your article is in the Draft namespace, it must be reviewed by an independent volunteer reviewer before it can be published. To move it forward, please make sure you have:
- Clicked “Submit your draft for review” at the top of the draft page.
- Added reliable, independent sources that clearly show the subject’s notability.
- Written the article in a neutral, encyclopaedic tone (not promotional).
- Once submitted, the draft enters the Articles for Creation (AfC) review queue. Reviews are done by volunteers, so the waiting time can vary from a few days to a few weeks.
- If the draft is declined, don’t worry — reviewers usually leave feedback, and you can improve the article and resubmit it.
- Feel free to ask if you need help improving the draft before or after review.
- Best regards, Ampimd (talk) 01:19, 12 January 2026 (UTC)
Question from Jennethier1974 (21:15, 10 January 2026)
[edit]Hi there, I just created this account and my IP is banned. I work for a non-profit and would like to update the page. The mailbox number is incorrect and the map to London where he address is in Virginia. I’m logged in, but still cannot edit it. Can you help me figure this out. Thanks! --Jennethier1974 (talk) 21:15, 10 January 2026 (UTC)
- Hi Jennethier 👋🏾,
- Welcome to Wikipedia, and thanks for explaining the situation.
- What’s likely happening is that your IP address is currently blocked, and the block is preventing edits even though you’ve created an account. This can happen if the IP was previously used for disruptive editing, and it affects all users connecting from that address.
- —Ampimd (talk) 01:32, 12 January 2026 (UTC)
- So this means I cannot make any edits? There seems to be multiple blocks on the IP address. Initially I was promoted to Turk off some privacy settings then the IP address black warnings popped up. Is the IP address connected to my location or phone? I live near a high school. If I go away from the high school could I make edits then? ~2026-23460-8 (talk) 01:36, 12 January 2026 (UTC)

- @~2026-23460-8 @Jennethier1974 In short: yes, the IP blocks are stopping you from editing right now.
- The blocks apply to the internet connection (IP address) you’re using, not to you personally or your account. If you’re on shared Wi-Fi (school, library, office, public network), that IP may be blocked because of past misuse by someone else.
- Going somewhere else or using a different network might give you a different IP, but that’s not a reliable solution.
- For now, the best option is to:
- Put an edit request on the article’s Talk page, explaining the exact corrections needed.
- Another editor can then make the changes for you.
- Best, — Ampimd (talk) 01:41, 12 January 2026 (UTC)
- Here are your options:
- 1️⃣
- If the block is IP-based (most likely)
- Your account may need time to become autoconfirmed (usually after 4 days and a few edits).
- Once autoconfirmed, you may be able to edit despite the IP block.
- 2️⃣
- Request an IP block exemption
- If you need to edit sooner, you can request an IP block exemption:
- Go to Wikipedia:Request an IP block exemption
- Explain that you are a new, good-faith editor affected by an IP block
- An administrator will review the request

Question from Amotaouakkil
[edit]Hi Ampimd! I am new to Wikipedia and have begun editing an article about a defunct magazine in Morocco. I also happen to be Moroccan. I have a question about these types of articles that are difficult to explore through secondary sources. If the article's editor-in-chief and founder wrote a book about the magazine and I reference it, does it count as a primary or a secondary source? Looking forward to working together!
