The inner ring is componed o densely populatit municipalities locatit in close proximity tae Dountoun Montreal. It includes the entire Island o Montreal, Laval, an the Urban Agglomeration o Longueuil.
The ooter ring is componed o law-densitie municipalities locatit on the fringe o Metropolitan Montreal. Maist o thir ceeties an touns are semi-rural. Specifically, the term aff-island suburbs refers tae those suburbs that are locatit on the North Shore o the Mille-Îles River, those on the South Shore that war never included in the megacity of Longueuil, an those on the Vaudreuil-Soulanges Peninsula. Commonties in that aurie are informally referred tae as the 450 an aw, efter the telephone aurie code that haes servit the region syne 1998.
Due tae thair proximity tae Montreal's dountoun core, some suburbs on the South Shore (Longueuil, Brossard, Saint-Lambert, an Boucherville) are uisually no includit in the aff-island suburbs even tho thay are on the mainland.
