| Algeria was one of the Geography and places good articles, but it has been removed from the list. There are suggestions below for improving the article to meet the good article criteria. Once these issues have been addressed, the article can be renominated. Editors may also seek a reassessment of the decision if they believe there was a mistake. | |||||||||||||

The opening of the article is not about Algeria enough and is different from other Middle Eastern countries.
[edit]Skitash and MrOllie didn't explain why do they think my edit is not improvement? my edits were with sources I improved my edits several times and they still didn't explain why do they think these other new changes are not improvement?
I wanted to add more information with sources about history of Algeria and dynasties and states centered in Algeria because the opening article just mentions ottomans and romans and byzantines....etc even though these empires dominated most West Asia and North Africa not just Algeria, the openining article is not about Algeria enough
The Levant (Syria, Lebanon, Jordan, Palestine), East Europe, Egypt and Iraq were occupied for centuries by the Greeks, Byzantines, Romans, Persians, Ottomans....etc In addition to these empires, other empires, The Levant (Syria, Lebanon, Jordan, Palestine) were occupied by the French crusaders for 200 years. Iraq was occupied by the Central Asians (Jalayirid Sultanate, Ilkhanate, Timurids) for 196 years and Iraq was also occupied by Persians for centuries
however most opening pages of these countries don't mention these empires that occupied these countries for centuries or just mention a few of them not all of them.
for example, the opening page of Lebanon just mention very few empires who occupied Lebanon but not all of them, it doesn't mention in the opening page most empires that occupied Lebanon.
Same thing with Egypt and Syria, no mention of Greeks, Persians and Romans...etc and it doesn't mention the empires of french crusaders, romans, byzantines, greeks..... dominating Syria etc.
there are some people who makes politically motivated edits on Wikipedia history articles more than other kinds of articles, some pan-nationalists mentions these empires dominating Algeria online to claim that most Algerians are not Berbers
I made this the edit and it was reverted again without a reason by some Wikipedia here, (the same Wikipedian has been criticized on some websites for editing a lot of articles about Berbers)
"Algeria has been inhabited since prehistory and was historically known as Numidia, like many other Mediterranean countries it has been at the crossroads of numerous cultures and civilizations, including the Phoenicians, Numidians, Romans, Vandals, and Byzantine Greeks. The territory of modern-day Algeria was the foundation of several states, such as Numidia, the Hammadids, the Zirids, the Regency of Algiers and other states"
I suggest removing "Turks" because regency of algiers was largely independent
and I suggest removing vandals because vandal kingdom was in small part of algeria it is like mentioning Muslim occupation of Southern France in the opening article of France.
Removal of Kingdom of Tlemcen
[edit]Hello, I noticed that the Kingdom of Tlemcen was removed from the formation section. Historically, the kingdom is known for being a significant state in Algerian history, I believe that there's no justification for removing it from the formation section.
Could we discuss whether it should or shouldn't be included?
Thanks for your thoughts. BullyanDZ (talk) 14:05, 10 October 2025 (UTC)
Add the Tamazight (Berber name) as the second native name
[edit]I would like to propose adding Berber name of Algeria to the infobox as an official native name alongside Arabic, Tamazight is an official language in Algeria and it is also spoken by Berbers in Algeria
The addition is:
• Tamazight (Tifinagh): ⵜⴰⴳⴷⵓⴷⴰ ⵜⴰⵣⴰⵢⵔⵉⵜ ⵜⴰⴷⵉⵎⵓⵇⵔⴰⵜⵉⵜ ⵏ ⵎⴻⴷⴷⴻⵏ (as well as the transliteration) BullyanDZ (talk) 18:07, 8 December 2025 (UTC)
- I agree with this, I used to open the wikipedia page and be happy to see the name of the country in all the languages, I found it cool. I don't know why it was removed. By the way, in the picture I linked under of an official speech, you can see the name of Algeria written in both arabic and tamazight.

- Indeed, even in a lot of civic buildings and institutions, Arabic alongside Tamazight is used BullyanDZ (talk) 12:38, 17 December 2025 (UTC)
- @Skitash since you just reverted an edit on this topic.
- As far as i know (might remember wrong), previous arguments have boiled down to the fact that there was no official name used by the government of Algeria in the Standard Algerian Berber yet. However, this isn't really relevant. The short form official name of Algeria is Dzayer in Standard Algerian Berber, and is used in diplomatic communications including the website of the ministry of foreign affairs.
- Algeria (Arabic: الجزائر Tamazight:Dzayer)[1]
- The long form name for the state is "Tagduda tazzayrit tamagdayt taɣerfant". This is for example on the official website of the Algerian ministry of interior affairs.[2] These names are the official names of the People's Democratic Republic of Algeria, and used across government communications.
- Having the name of the state in all it's official languages wherever possible is the standard. Refer to for example: Belgium, Morocco, Central African Republic, Chad, Belarus. Fun fact: Even USA states sometimes have an official language other than English, and thus have those names featured on their pages. See: South Dakota and Hawaii.
- So, why should the officially used, official name of Algeria in it's constitutionally guaranteed official language not be included in the infobox of the country? Morocco, in the exact same situation, also rightfully features the Berber language. Whatever748 (talk) 21:55, 17 December 2025 (UTC)
- The last RfC established that there's no single official Berber script (the "Académie algérienne de la langue amazighe" is yet to choose between the Tifinagh, Latin, and Arabic scripts) and that it's not our job to choose. Therefore, the consensus was to add the Berber names to the name section. Skitash (talk) 22:35, 17 December 2025 (UTC)
- Adding the Tamazight name does not require privileging a single script, the name section can list the Tamazight name in multiple commonly used scripts (Tifinagh and Latin, for example), or present it without implying exclusivity, see the Morocco article BullyanDZ (talk) 22:31, 26 December 2025 (UTC)

There is a typo in the last paragraph of the first section, where it says "Sonatrach, the national oil company, is the largest company in Africa and a major supplier of natural gas to Europe. In 2013, it had the largest miltiary budget in Africa." "Military" has been misspelled. Nadira Rodin (talk) 16:58, 30 December 2025 (UTC)

[edit]@Sinbabad: where in that source does it say but...
(to link the two subjects)? M.Bitton (talk) 17:46, 1 January 2026 (UTC)
- The source clearly says that the population goes from 2 millions in 1850 to 8,6 millions in 1954. Sinbabad (talk) 17:57, 1 January 2026 (UTC)
- That part is not about the demographics, it's about the genocide and other massacres that led to the Algerian war. The fact that you injected WP:OR to link the two is serious cause for concern. M.Bitton (talk) 18:02, 1 January 2026 (UTC)
