Allow notifications to users who aren't the page author
[edit]I noticed this bot on User talk:Conversion script and am glad it got off the ground; I'd seen the very beginning of this discussion about the idea but didn't follow up on it. Just now I've thought of an idea to make the bot potentially more useful; I wonder if the bot could notify a user about not just articles they've created but also a customised list of articles (like pages they've worked on where they aren't the article creator), perhaps in a page only editable by the user in their userspace like User:Graham87/NervousBot.css or something (the CSS extension would mean that only the userspace owner and interface admins could edit the page). I was in a situation a while back where this could have been useful; see a post I made on meta regarding a proposal to remove language link edits from the Recent Changes and Watchlist Feed of projects besides Wikidata for more information about that. Graham87 (talk) 10:16, 28 September 2026 (UTC)
- Hi, I'll look into this/think about it and get back to you, it is something I have wanted to implement but not sure 100% of the right way to determine "subscriptions". The .css idea is interesting. Balance3641 🍃 (talk · contribs) 11:13, 28 September 2026 (UTC)
- I've implemented that now, it isn't on a .css page, but it's a template you can transclude on either your talk page or a dedicated user page to subscribe to any page you want. Instructions are on the User Page for the bot. Balance3641 🍃 (talk · contribs) 12:33, 28 September 2026 (UTC)
- Thanks very much; done. Graham87 (talk) 13:19, 28 September 2026 (UTC)
- This is really impressive!
Does NervousBot have any plans to be made available to other wikis? If it could be deployed to the other Projects and language wikis, it could be an elegant solution for those who want to keep tracking language link changes to articles, even when they have been disabled from the local wiki's Recent Changes feed. Danny Benjafield (WMDE) (talk) 14:05, 28 September 2026 (UTC)- Thank you very much! I'm happy to work on either cleaning up the code & making it open source, or deploying it to work on other projects, would just need translations of the messages and pages, but it should be able to be deployed on other projects whenever. About your bot
[edit]Hi @NervousBot and @Balance3641, I recently asked for feedback on a proposal to remove Language link changes from the wikis Recent Changes (and therefore, also Watchlist) pages. I was told about your both by the poster above (@Graham87) and I wanted to contact you to ask about how your bot operates or where it tracks sitelink/language link changes from to create the user talk messages.
Would it be possible to see the code?
Or perhaps you can tell me if this bot reads from the local Wiki Recent Changes, or if it looks at Wikidata Recent Changes? Our proposal could potentially break your bot from operating.
Please feel free to reply to me here or my User Talk. Danny Benjafield (WMDE) (talk) 10:52, 28 September 2026 (UTC)
- At the moment I don't have the code in a state that I'm comfortable open sourcing, I track the RC from Wikidata, which looks like it will remain working if your proposal goes through right? Balance3641 🍃 (talk · contribs) 11:11, 28 September 2026 (UTC)
- I'm not @Danny Benjafield (WMDE): but it sounds like it would. Graham87 (talk) 11:26, 28 September 2026 (UTC)
- I see the bot in action and wonder how an unsubscribe for a user who hasn't edited since 2010, such as User:YellowMonkey, would work. This is just an example. Could the bot be trained not to post on pages with a "... may have left ..." tag on top? --Gerda Arendt (talk) 12:13, 28 September 2026 (UTC)
- I'm open to feedback for this, other bots seem to post regardless of account status. If there is a consensus that old accounts shouldn't be messaged, I can implement that. Balance3641 🍃 (talk · contribs) 12:31, 28 September 2026 (UTC)
- Yes, I revert others also who post to a user who died that some redirect is under discussion. A certain amount of informing talk page watchers is fine but in this specific case, I don't see much relevance, - it's not like an article proposed to be deleted that I could save. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 13:30, 28 September 2026 (UTC)
- @Gerda Arendt: Also the bot only posts to each user talk page once unless their talk page is actively subscribed to the bot. Graham87 (talk) 13:23, 28 September 2026 (UTC)
- Yes, understand, but I still see 229 entries for the bot on my watchlist. Some things to think about:
- Article creation is indeed a poor guide to key editors of an article, as pointed out below. It's often just a redirect.
- If the notifications went to some designated user-subpage, as suggested below, my watchlist would be more meaningful.
- I hope for much shorter notifications for repeated entries to the same user. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 14:02, 29 September 2026 (UTC)

- Hello, yes in that case we should not disrupt your bot from operating: the Wikidata Recent Changes table won't be changed. Thanks! Danny Benjafield (WMDE) (talk) 12:16, 28 September 2026 (UTC)
Target a user subpage
[edit]Is there a way to get the notifications on a subpage rather than the main talkpage? This has a couple of advantages. Firstly, if these are frequent that's a lot of orange bars. Secondly, this sort of notification would be interesting to see in a series, and collecting them on a subpage creates an automatic chronological list. CMD (talk) 15:23, 28 September 2026 (UTC)
- Thanks for the feedback, I'll look into this as an option. Balance3641 🍃 (talk · contribs) 23:46, 28 September 2026 (UTC)
- Yeah there are some pages I'm involved with where I'd be mildly curious about new interwiki links but they'd happen so relatively often that I wouldn't want a new message each time. So I'd like the subpage idea too. Graham87 (talk) 19:48, 29 September 2026 (UTC)
- If you put the template and use |here=yes this should work now I believe. Balance3641 🍃 (talk · contribs) 13:56, 3 October 2026 (UTC)
Wording
[edit]Hi this is quite an interesting bot, thanks for making it, but is it possible that the notification text could be re-worded a bit? I'm honestly not a fan of "linked to your page X" as it implies the user owns the article. Could you re-word it to something like "linked to page X, which you created"? Thanks ―Panamitsu (talk) 21:33, 28 September 2026 (UTC)
- I have a similar reaction, except that I wonder why one needs to receive a talk-page message when a link is made to an article? Or at least I don't really need or want that. In fact, I was convinced I had nothing to do with the article Duris, Lebanon, about which you notified me. Apparently, 18 years ago, when the world was new, I had created the tiniest of stubs for the archaeological site of Douris but have not visited the article since and have zero memory of doing it. Subsequent users have been the ones to develop the substance of the article and would likely be more interested in how it's faring. When a user is motivated to know what links to an article, the existing tool for checking is sufficient for me. Cynwolfe (talk) 23:20, 28 September 2026 (UTC)
- Hey, thanks for the feedback, I've implemented that now. Appreciate it. Balance3641 🍃 (talk · contribs) 23:44, 28 September 2026 (UTC)
Discussion at Jimbotalk regarding this bot
[edit]- I have strong opinions regarding opt-in, opt-out, and consent. Clearly some other editors on Jimbotalk disagree. --Guy Macon (talk) 15:42, 29 September 2026 (UTC)
The bot shouldn't post on IP talk pages
[edit]... like at User talk:217.168.172.202, which appeared on my watchlist. Article creation was disabled for unregistered users in 2005 so, unless page moves were involved, the article creations would date from before then. And now we use temporary accounts, so messages on IP talk pages will never be read by the intended recipient anyway. Graham87 (talk) 20:00, 29 September 2026 (UTC)
- And that includes old-style IP's where the last octet is replaced with xxx, like User talk:66.81.45.xxx. I see from the log that it hasn't posted to any username containing a ">" (which almost always indicates an imported edit; that's good). Also you might run against Wikipedia's 2MB hard limit on wikitext size on the log page if you're not careful. Graham87 (talk) 20:14, 29 September 2026 (UTC)
Just checking
[edit]Hi. Just wanted to make sure that we weren't switching over entirely to Wikidata link notifications being made on talk, as opposed to notices. Any clarification or context is appreciated. All the best, and thanks for making a bot. CSGinger14 (talk) 06:02, 30 September 2026 (UTC)
- @CSGinger14: This bot does not replace Wikidata link notifications, which only occur when an article on the English Wikipedia you created is connected to a Wikidata item. The bot notifies you when interlanguage links are added to an existing Wikidata entry, which is a different process. Graham87 (talk) 06:35, 30 September 2026 (UTC)
Please provide an explicit text color in the bot's messages in order to avoid Linter background color without text color errors in the bot's messages. Here's a sample diff. Thanks. – Jonesey95 (talk) 21:58, 30 September 2026 (UTC)
- Fixed, thank you. Balance3641 🍃 (talk · contribs) 10:36, 1 October 2026 (UTC)
Bot flag needed
[edit]Can you please get the bot flag assigned to this bot task? I am seeing diffs like this show up in my Watchlist, even though I have "Hide bots" disabled. Thanks. – Jonesey95 (talk) 22:03, 30 September 2026 (UTC)
- @Jonesey95: The bot is flagged and using the flag, see Special:UserRights/NervousBot. Tenshi! (Talk page) 22:07, 30 September 2026 (UTC)
- Well, it's the only bot whose edits are showing up on my Watchlist, e.g. this edit shows up as "User talk:PBS .. (diff|hist) .. +781 NervousBot talk contribs (→New cross-language page link: Interdiction: new section)". If you look at that User talk page's history, NervousBot's edit does not have "(bot)" after the edit summary, but the subsequent edit, by Lowercase sigmabot III, shows "(bot)" after the edit summary. Something is not quite right, it appears. – Jonesey95 (talk) 22:16, 30 September 2026 (UTC)
- Maybe Primefac knows more about this magic than we do. – Jonesey95 (talk) 22:19, 30 September 2026 (UTC)
- (edit conflict) That's an edit summary trick. See the diff of this comment. Tenshi! (Talk page) 22:19, 30 September 2026 (UTC)
- Indeed; the bot is flagged as such. Primefac (talk) 22:31, 30 September 2026 (UTC)
- And yet the edits show up in my Watchlist when I have "Hide bots" selected, and other bot edits do not show up in my Watchlist. Can either of you replicate this issue, for example by adding User talk:PBS to their Watchlist, selecting Hide bots, and verifying that this bot's edits appear while edits by Lowercase sigmabot III do not appear? If so, something appears to be wrong.
- I guess my real question, then, is: How do I hide this bot's edits from my Watchlist? (P.S. Tenshi's "edit summary trick" edit shows in my Watchlist, presumably because it is not a real bot edit.) – Jonesey95 (talk) 22:58, 30 September 2026 (UTC)
- Hmm, maybe something changed between the above posts and now. The post at User talk:Redrose64 does not appear on my Watchlist. – Jonesey95 (talk) 00:11, 1 October 2026 (UTC)
- Indeed; the bot is flagged as such. Primefac (talk) 22:31, 30 September 2026 (UTC)

One more suggestion
[edit]"if you wish to opt-in" should be "if you wish to opt in". "Opt-in" is an adjective, while "opt in" is a verb phrase. You are using it as a verb phrase (the adjective appearing in the following phrase, "please follow the opt-in instructions", is correct). – Jonesey95 (talk) 00:08, 1 October 2026 (UTC)
- Fixed, appreciated Balance3641 🍃 (talk · contribs) 10:37, 1 October 2026 (UTC)
Not working for me ... or did I do something wrong?
[edit]Because I created the article about Maureen Jones, I should have gotten notifications about de:Maureen Jones, etc., right? But I haven't. I checked through my subscription list (unless its length is the issue) and I checked the log but it's not mentioned there. Thanks in advance. Graham87 (talk) 15:43, 3 October 2026 (UTC)
- I'll look into that one for you. I have just overhauled the handling of things, I had realised I hadn't deployed the changes, it may have missed it in that time for some reason, but will confirm if I can. Balance3641 🍃 (talk · contribs) 03:38, 4 October 2026 (UTC)
- It edited my subscription list earlier, so that's good. Graham87 (talk) 16:57, 4 October 2026 (UTC)
Suggestion
[edit]Could the bot notify me via email, instead of posting to my talk page? Like how Wikipedia:Bot activity monitor works? DatGuyTalkContribs 19:22, 3 October 2026 (UTC)
- I'll have a look into that for you. Balance3641 🍃 (talk · contribs) 03:29, 4 October 2026 (UTC)
Grammatical error
[edit]Hey again, I just noticed this but in the bot message it sends to users, "has been linked to page" should be "has been linked to the page". Re the wording section up above. Thanks! Graham87 (talk) 16:59, 4 October 2026 (UTC)
- Cheers, I've fixed that now, I really appreciate all the help, suggestions and feedback you have given regarding this bot. Balance3641 🍃 (talk · contribs) 02:07, 5 October 2026 (UTC)
- Thanks and no worries. Graham87 (talk) 03:57, 5 October 2026 (UTC)
Notifications to blocked/banned editors
[edit]The bot should probably check if the target user talk page belongs to an editor that is blocked, especially if it's indefinite. E.g. it should probably not notify editors like this, who is community-banned and has not edited in nearly a decade. Ed [talk] [OMT] 18:24, 8 October 2026 (UTC)
Misleading opt-in instructions
[edit]I followed the opt-in instructions and added {{bots|allow=NervousBot}} to my user talk page, and only just realised that according to the documentation for Template:Bots, that blocks all other bots (e.g. preventing me from receiving DYK messages). If my understanding is correct, that should be changed. Thanks! Helpful Cat🐈 07:19, 9 October 2026 (UTC)
- That is really embarrassing, I thought that I had checked that it just allowed the bot, I'll fix that asap, and then work out if I'm able to send a message to everyone who has it set to tell them that is what has been set. Thank you very much for the info. Balance3641 🍃 (talk · contribs) 08:36, 9 October 2026 (UTC)

Dark mode
[edit]I'm not sure where I can find the source for the styling of the notifications, but it would be nice for them to look good on the dark mode version of Wikipedia. Fortek67 (talk) 16:57, 9 October 2026 (UTC)
- I will look into this for you. At the moment it is just in the code. Balance3641 🍃 (talk · contribs) 02:12, 10 October 2026 (UTC)
Request for similar notification re: quality status promotion
[edit]I've already discussed this with the bot operator, but I wanted to post a request here for future reference.
I'd be interested in receiving a notification when an article I've started has been promoted to quality status at another Wikipedia. One way to do this is to notify users when a little ribbon is added to the Wikidata entry for that language. For example, for 1000 Forms of Fear, there are ribbons next to trwiki and viwiki at Wikidata. I know each project has their own process for quality assessment and promotion, but the opportunity for a notification could be when those ribbons are added.
Sharing here as a reminder and in case any other editors want to weigh in, or have other ideas! Thanks and happy editing! ---Another Believer (Talk) 17:20, 9 October 2026 (UTC)
